A Compliment to Mr. Boyce. The Richmond South in a sensible article on ' Our National Revenue System" thu.s compliments our immediate Representative: Congress re-assembled yesterday. We learn with pleasure from Washington that the Honorable Mr. Boyce, ofSoutii Carolina. will introduce resoluti ms iu the popular branch of that body, asking for a special committee to enquire into the expediency of changing our vevenure system. This will be a glorious movement for bringing back our Government to first principles. We congratulate the true friends of the Constitution that it emanated in such an intellect as that of a rising statesman of the Palmetto State. ******* But we shall advert to this subject in a few days. In the meantime, we shall await the con templated movement with the liveliest solicitude. We rejoice that there is at last about to be a beginning, and a beginning under such favorable auspices. There is not a man in the Union more capable of discharging the duties to be confided to the chairman of such a special committee than Mr. Boyce. We regard his designation for that post as certain. The friends of free trade have a right to demand it. York-rllle Military School. We are in receipt of the annual Catalogue of this Institution, which is in a very flourishing condition. under the charge of Major Jenkins and Capta>n Coward, with Lieutenants Seabrook, Law and Thomas as assistants. We have a great partiality for Military Schools, for in them, at least, boys are taught obedience?that obedience is the foundation of all order and without it nothing can be successful. Every boy who graduates at a Military School is worth something. He can go forth into the world and make a living. Such schools educate no drones, no gentlemen vagabonds. The Yorkvillc School is preparatory to entering the State Institution in Columbia. Young men are likewise there prepared for the South Carolina College.?Greenville Patriot. An Act Tci increase the Penallt/ for Setting Fire to the Woods. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives, now met and sitting in General Assembly, and by the authority of the same, That any person who shall wilfully and. maliciously set fire to, or burn any grass, brush, or other combustible matter, so as thereby any woods, fields, fences, or marshes, of any other person or persons, be set on fire, or cause the same to bo done, or be thereunto aiding or assisting, shall, upon indictment and conviction thereof, be liable to fine and imprisonment, at the discretion of the Court, and shall, moreover, be liable to the action of any person or persons who may have sustained damage thereby. A Movh in the Rioht Direction.?We notice in the proceedings of Congress that Mr. Boyce, the Representative from the Richland District, has submitted the following resolution : Resolved, That a committee of seven be appointed, to which shall be referred to inquire into and report on the following subjects, viz : A reduction of the expenditures of the Government ; The navigation laws of the United States: The existing duties on imports ; and The expediency of a gradual repeal of all duties on imports, and a resort exclusively to internal taxation. Columbia Market. January 11, 1S58. Cotton.?At the close of our weekly report of the cotton market ending on the 2d inst., it will no doubt be recollected we left the market dull and unsettled, with but little disposition evinced on the part of the buyers to operate, even at the low figures that then prevailed. The week just brought to a close opened with the same dull feeling and inactive demand, and up to Wednesday evening there wns no quotable change in prices. On Thursday morning, however, the advices from Liverpool by the Atlantic to the 23d ult., came to hand, reporting a good demand for the article, at an advance of \ (a> Ad., with an improved toue in the Manchester accounts. These advices had a very decided and favorable effect on our market, and in the course of the day prices advanced J (j? f, and in some instances Ac. 011 former quotation?, r\f VttvcinocQ rrn SntnnlflV PV0T1* Ul.U UJ, lu v,?v J itjg the demand was good, and prices full and firm. The sales of the week foot up about 280 bales, at prices ranging from fi} @ 8}c., most sales at 7 J ? 8J cents. Bacon.?There is a fair supply of new bacon on the market, and also a fair demand at 12 (a! 12.} for hog round. New lard 12 12}c. ^ lb. Corn.?There has been an active demand for corn during the past week, and prices are a shade higher. We now quote GO @ G5c. Peas.?The stock of peas on sale is very light, and as the demand is good prices are advancing. We now quote 85 @00 'p? bushel. Oats.?There is no oats offering, and therefore there is no definite price, and consequently we cannot give quotations. Flour.?The stock of flour on sales is large, and the demand being rather dull prices are sink ing. We still quote, however, S5.50 @ SO for common to superfine brands; extra family flour SG.50 ?! hbl. PHILLIPS. Jau 14 2 2t SEWING MACHINES. Reasons Why the Grover and Baker's Sewing Machine is Universallypreferred for FAMILY SEWING. FIRST.?It is more simple and easily kept in order than any other Machine. 2d. It makes a Seam which will not rip or ravel, though every third stitch is cut. 3d. It sews from two ordinary spools, and thus all trouble of winding thread is avoided, while the same machine can be adapted at pleasure, by a mere change of spools, to all varieties of work. 4tli. The same machine runs silk, linen, thread, and commmon spool cotton, with equal facility. I uth. The seam is as elastic as the most elastic i fabric, so that it is free from all liability to break in washing, ironing, or otherwise. 6th. The stitch made by this machine is more beautiful than any other made either by hand or machine. 7th. Because it is the only sewing macuine in the world ever invvnted, so constructed as to fully meet the demands of families for general use. Circulars, with nil the different styles and prices, sent to those who wish, and printed directions go with every machine, so that every one can learn in a short time. All Orders promptly filled; and Machines sold at the same price at this office, as at their office in New York. Orders on Factors for sixt}' days will be received in payment for the same. II. W.
