the fanatic*, from one end of the land to the other. It is able, clear, courteous and dignified, and will carry conviction to many hitherto doubting ones."' The Freedom or the Press.?A controversy has occurred between the Charleston Mercury and one of its correspondents, in regard to the freedom of the Press, to which we should have remained a silent, though not uninterested, spectator, had not one of the parties appealed to the Press of the State generally, and to us particularly, for an expression of opinion in regard to the matter in controversy. In what we have to say, regard will be had to general principles only, and not to particular cases. It seems to us, that the only matter for consideration is the prerogative of an editor, and not whether lie errs by allowing too great a latitude to correspondents on the one hand, or by restricting them on the other. Such an error, in either case would not invalidate a general principle. What I then is the prerogative of an editor ? To prepare and select such articles for the publication under his control as in his judgment, the wants of his readers require. We suppose thus far there can be but one opinion. Then, if he selects, he must reject unsuitable matter, and his right to do so cannot be questioned, no matter how far his judgment may err in particular instances. Concede this, and the question is settled.?Cheraw Gazette. National Division.?The Virginia Conductor, an official organ of the order, gives the following abstract and summary of the proceedings of most direct interest in the late session at Providence, R. I.: * ? -* Changes in the constitution.?ny mc ios?^?uVUal Division there were but two changes in the Constitution, and both of them are very immaterial. The first is that the per capita tax shall not be laid on suspended members, or members more than six months in arrears. Second. No Division can have a by-law expelling a member for non-attendance. The Nexc Ritual.?The National Division has adopted a new Ritual, to be published and brought into use by the^ 1st of January, 1858. We understand this new ceremony is made up of the old Ritual and one now in use, partaking, however, more largely of the old. We are glad that the preponderance is in favor of the old, since we could not get the old restored in toto. Our delegates did all they could to accomplish the wishes of the Grand Division of Virginia on this subject, but failed in their efforts?so that we must content ourselves with yielding a cheerful compliance to the constituted majority. Good Advice to Bbvtcs and Yocrself !?There is nothing truer than these lines: "Men at sometimes are masters of their fates: The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, But in ourselves, that we are underlings." When we consider that a chance is presented to the reader, which Brutus never had, it is strange if he should decline to become the "master of his fate." Swan & Co., with their popular Georgia T.ntfprifts come once in every week, on Saturday, at Augu9ta, Georgia, to allow the adventurers a chance to get easy for life. Many have availed themselves of these opportunities, and now bask in the sunshine of prosperity. An investment of $10 books one for a splendid fortune; $5 for an elegant competency : and $2 SO for a comfortable start in life. The chances do not depend on the operations of the "Bulls" and the "Bears."? The stock does not fluctuate; the chances are always the same; and large snm9 are drawn out every week, by those who never saw large sums before. Why, then, continue to be an "underling?" Try now, and if unsuccessful, remember that next Saturday you wiir have another opportunity. Remember that every brave man can command lurk in the Georgia Lotteries. The professor is stopping at that timc-bouered establishment, the Fountain Hotel.
