complaint of the scarcity of corn. Corn is selling at one dollar per bushel, and difficult to g.-t at j that, whilst the scarcity of money renders it ut- ; terly impossible for many to supply themselves at j any price. The corn and cotton crops of the Dis- i trict are still very backward, although the very j warm spell of weather, which we have had for a week past, is doing much towards forcing them forward. With good seasons, a fair average crop of every thing will be made, notwithstanding the backwardness of the spring.?Anderson True Carolinian. A.vothke Hail Stobm.?It does seem that calamitous visitations upon the crops, truly disheartening to all classes of persons as well as farmers, are far more numerous this season than is usual. The section of country South-West and South of this, in the neighborhoods contiguous to Camp Creek, Dry Creek, Hanging Rock, Kussel place and Flat Rock, was visited with a storm of hail on Friday evening last, which dealt immense destruction to the crops. Wheat, which promised ^ so fair is represented as being almost destroyed. P In cotton fields, where the storm was most destructive, scarcely a vestige of the plant remains. We understand that they are now, generally, being planted in corn; some few persons are planting cotton again.?Lancaster Ledger. A serious accident occurred on last Saturday, I to a foreigner named Hahn. He was in the em-1 ployment of Mr. McBee, in blasting rock below Reedy Falls, in this village. It seems that the powder ignited from a spark struck accidentally from the rock whilst preparing the fuse. His right hand was blown off and his arm so fractured that amputation became l *essary. Other parts of his body was injured, an . his right eye destroyed. A i negro boy, belonging to, Mr. McBee, was slightly | injured also.?Greenville Enterprise. The weather during the last few days has been 1 oppressively warm; the thermometer standing on 1 Tuesday last, daring the hottest part of the day ] at 92 deg., in the shade. Such weather, however, is the life of the cotton plant, against which the- 1 cool nights of the past week, operated very un- ' favorably. Both corn and cotton need some such 1 stimulous to quicken them into lively growth, as I they are very backward. The wheat is doing fine- 1 ly and promises an abundant harvest. In some i portions of the District, it is already sufficiently matured for the sickle.?Abbeville Press. On Monday morning last, a negro man, Stephen, 1 belonging to Mesrrs. Hugh and Robert Douglass, | of this District, came to his death in a suddeu and frightful m&mer, being thrown from a mule in harness, and dragged for half a mile by one of his feet, whioh had become entangled in the gearing. For the a past three years, she had resided with her son, f Dr. Barron of our village, and but a few days prior to her death, had left his house, or. a visit to f her friends in the oountry, in the enjoyment of good health. She was suddenly attacked with ac- fl cute disease of the chest on Monday, which last- ( ed until the Sunday evening following, when she was taken from her bodily sufferings to her final rest. During a long life, spent from early youth i in the church, she had been noted for her indus try, frugality, humility, and her christian walk j and conversation. To her friends who are widely 3 scattered, the writer of this article would remark for their consolation, that in the hour of death, ? po fear of its approach was allowed to come over i her.
