told that some few tricky men were bought. If a | true man was not elected, it was either because j of a derilection of duty on the part of national men, or because they were in a minority in the Legislature. He did not speak of these things with pleasure, nor mean to compromise the future for"the tranquility of the present, or help to consolidate any party which amalgamates strength : without establishing principle. The irresistable tondency of the event was to sectional organiza- i tions. lie did not agree with many friends as to the immateriality of the doctrine of Squatter Sovereignty. He regarded it as a most dangerous, > mischievous, and demoralizing doctrine. It rested ou the fact that the sovereign States of the Union, exercising the power of government as agents, , are to be put down by squatters. Wheu men say that slavery depends on policy, they assert that those who go to the Territories may confiscate , property recognized by other parts of the Union, and this only paves the way for the other doctrine, , that property over and above the Constitdtion can be stricken down. Slave-y agitation, so far from being crushed out by the late election, has been ' increased. Slavery existed prior to law. It was : as old as the institution of marriage, or the individuality of property. It did not rise from compacts, or violence, but grew up like any other rudiamentary institution. He argued that it was the very foundation of the glory and refinement of Athens and Rome. Although the Ethiopian has for 5,000 years been i in contact with superior civilization, he is a savage still. He repeated that the tendency of af- ' fairs was to the formation of geographical parties, which would lead to a dissolution of th.e Union, and in this connection showed the power and TPannrvoa nf the South, contemlinc that she is able to save her soil from inva?ion and conquest, ! and her flag from dishonor. The South must, i and will expand. She will carry her institutions j into the surrounding States, where the govern- , ments are falling and the people are lapsing into ' mongrclism. The State Rights men at the South, I numbering nine-tenths of the citizens, will rally round the standard of progress. Whatever else perish, those institutions will be saved. Mr. Bliss said that Mr. Keitt had succeeded in showing that from the earliest period, the world | had been subject to rapine and bloodshed, and accounted for the fact. He had succeeded in show- j ing that these brilliant little republics to which he alluded soou fell and faded from existence, be- j cause their institutions wore founded on force and ; injustice, rather than on law; and, also, as the , world had progressed in civilization, all persons, | except his beloved Arabs, are turning their attention, to the amelioration of labor. Indian Outrages In Florida. The St. Augustine Ancient Cihj gives the following particulars of the outrages committed recently | by the Indians in Florida, and which wc have ; heretofore, briefly noticed: Colonel Douglas Dummitt, inspector of the customs at Smyrna, arrived here on Monday last, and brings the intelligence of the murder of Mr. ' Shive, his wife and two children by the Indians.? Mr. Shive resided on Mosquito South Lagoon, about four miles south of the settlement at Smyrna, and had but lately moved there from Philadelphia, for the purpose of cultivating an orange grove.? } Two young men, sons of Mr. Sheldon, of Smyrna, , having been up the Lagoon, as far Turtle Mound, on a ducking excursion, on account of the high j wind, on Tuesday, the 23d, put into the shore at , Mr. Shive'? place for the purpose of remaining i during the night. On nearing the landing they discovered the body of Mrs. Shive and one of the children ; they immediately put oft' froin the landing, and crossed the Lagoon to the residence of I Colonel Dummitt, informing hint of their discovery. ; The uextdav Colonel Dummitt, with the two Mr. ! Loud:*, who were his neighbors, and several others, visited the premises and buried the bodies found. From all that can be known, it is supposed the . Indians, on the 20th, (the same day twelve months before they attacked Lieut. Hartsuff,) approached the house from the west, and killed .Mr. Skive by the ride balls which struck him in the face, while at work some two hundred yards from the house: it is supposed that Mrs. Sbive ami the child that j was fooud with her, taking the alarm, ran to the river to escape by the boat, but were botb shot be- ! fore reaching it, the boat beiDg in shoal water some distance from the beach. It is believed, when the Indians killed Mr. Skive, they immedi- ! atcly repaired to the dwelling, and then taking i the gun of Mr, Skive found there loaded with : buckshot, discharged it at the child in the water, ' its body indicated it was killed by such shooting: ^ Mrs. Skive was killed by.two ride balls in the neck P and head. One of the children of Mr. Skive was cripple, and without doubt was left in the excitement of so sudden an attack and alarm in the house. The child has not been found, ami there can be but little doubt these inhuman savages burnt it with the building; everything on the premises thai was not carried oif was destroyed by lire. When shall we be rid of these devils incarnate Here are four lives lost and valuable prop- J erty destroyed, and these rascals travelled more than one hundred miles out of their claimed territory to perform Ibis act of butchering in cold blood, innocent children and defenceless women.
