Straight Ribs, vs. Crooked, Uniformity of Roll, &c. 4 LTHOUGH the advantngo of the straight rib ; J\. in the COTTON GIN has been discovered for j ' more than twenty years, yet it has not been sufficiently known or appreciated by the planter. The advantage cousists simply in this: that the ribs, I when worn, can be moved down to where they are not worn, which answers the purpose of a new sett of ribs. Three moves can be made, which gives four wearings, which is equal to four setts of ribs. So that a purchaser having iu view prospective expense, would lose the price of three setts of j-ibs if the ribs of his gin were not moveable. Any planter with common intelligence can move the straight ribs himself, and thus obtain all the benefit of a new sett of ribs. The greatest uniformity can be obtaiued in the roll by giving the ribs the proper angle, the effect of which is, to throw the weight of the roll more upon the saws than upon the seed board, ami by adjusting the seed-board so as to prevent the seed when once detached from re-uniting with the roll; this improvement has been made by the subscriber within a few months. With regard to fast picking gins, the greatest amount of lint is obtained iu two ways. First, by i having long teeth lying as nearly parallel to the i verge of the saw as possible, so that the teeth en- i tering the ribs so much point foremost they hrc i obligetfto carry all the cotton through that they J i get hold of. A fifty saw gin with these sort of! I teeth on a nine iuch saw has gined eight bales per day. The second plan is, to form the breast so i that the teeth meets the ribs nearly at right angles, i > ?|10 /.nfr,,,, jnif, tjie teeth of the i UI1U bUUO p?v?c HIV vv..VM saws. This plnw is very straining on the saws, j and causes a much heavier draught. Whether the j i cotton is injured by an overwrought speed, the j planters must judge for themselves. The subscri- ; her will furnish to the planters of this and adjoining Districts Cottou Gins equal in durable value to any in the country. Delivered at Chester, York, or Charlotte, or any landing on the road for ?2 persaw. The brushes of my gins are covered with tin ; which adds much to their strength and durability. Ail orders promptly atteuded to. JAMES M. ELLIOTT. Winnsboro. S. C. July 17, 185C. 21* 3m ]YUI^ THE S4TH REGIMEMT, S. C. Militia, will parade at Yorkvllle, S.
