pear to be serious, ami it is requisite to attract the hearty co-operation of every interest. Mr. Aiken is not a showy man in the House, hut lie is popular ami strong; good sense and integrity, rather than brilliancy and wit, being his salient points of character. Though a large slaveholder, and perhaps more materially interested in the practical issue between the sectious than any member of either i branch of Congress, he has on no occasion joined j in the contests of agitation which have disturbed ' the country duriug the past six years, but has beeu content with a becoming discharge of duty and an upright course of conduct, which has commanded eminent respect. He was one of those in South Carolina who never favored the disunion | movement, and who, iu despite of the political j managers that preached it as an article of political faith, was chosen to the highest office of the j State, without desire or effort on his owu part. Eminently conservative by nature, without being cramped by any of those inusty notions which seemed to connect the idea of conservatism with reverence for ancient usuges and traditions, he is imbued with that national and catholic spirit which justly appreciates the diversified interests and necessities of a country like ours, and he has ' always manifested the firmness to aet out such convictions. If events should so shape themselves that a rally cannot be made upon a Northern man, the probability is by no means remote that Governor Aiken or General Rusk will unite the support for which the divided interests of Virginia are now struggling. From the Charleston Standard. The Flag First .Plan ted ln|the City of Mexico Messrs. Editors: In your issue of Saturday you noticed the claims set up by Benjamin S. Roberts, Captain of the Rifles in the New York Regiment, to the honor of having raised the flag of that company, the first over the gates of Mexico, and I was glad to see the refutation given \o the claim. 1 was with Gen. Quitman when the Garita deBelen was within a few feet of him when he called for the National Flag, which was supposed to be in j possession of the New York Regiment. I myself ! answered that it was not there; when he replied I give me a flag, and Lieut Selleck stepped forward | and presented the flag of the Palmetto Regiment, j Gen. Quitman said place it on the acqueduct, and j though we were within two hundred yards of the j citadel, surrounded by an abattis and wet ditch, and firing upon us with musketry and ordnance, he did as he was ordered, and elevating J the flag, there held it until Oen. Quitman, conscious of his extreme peril, ordered it down again. That beyond all question was the first flag raised within the city. Whether the flag from the New York Regiment was afterwards elevated from any other point, I have no means of knowing; but certain it is, that Gereral Qu n ?n. attended by a portion of the Pa'metto and New York Regiments, was the first to enter the city, and the flog of the Palmetto Regiment was, as I have stated, the first, in requisition. My recollection upon this subject is particularly distinct?it may be supposed, that I was particularly impressed with all the incidents j of an occurrence so important, but beside this, I j had just come from preventing a difficulty upon j f the same subject at the heights of Chapultepec.? Wh in the heights, were cleared two officers, the one Lieut. Pickett, of the 8th infantry, and the other, a Lieutenant of the 9th, were both ambitious of raising the flags of their respective regiments.? The Lieutenant of the 9th was in the act of raising his flag, when Lieut. Pickett, who was an adjutant, ordered him to haul it down. He claimed that there was nothing in the position and services in the 9th infantry, to entitle it to that distinction ; but the order was resisted, and both officers drew their swords, and were in the act of settling the question by the appeal to arms, when interposing, I begged them to remember that we were in alf probability standing upon a mine that would be thrown up at any instant, and that every consideration of humanity required that we should draw off the men as soon as possible. They did so, and falling again into the ranks of my own regiment, we were able torparticipate under Gen. Quitman in the brilliant achievement at the Belen Gate. A claim has been made by one of the Pal- I metto Regiment but it has not been pressed, as every flag was held to be the flag of the regiment. I ONE OF THE PALMETTOS. Cotton.?The demand in our cotton market has / continued to be lively, though the supply is still very limited. Prices range at from 8.1 to 10^. Flour.?The price of flour continues to decline, and the demand is but moderate. We quote from $3 ? $3$ according to quality. Grain.? Wheat also contiuues dull. The small quantities offering are taken avt $1.00 per bushel. Corn is in good demand, at from 55 to 021 cents bushel. Meal, very little in market, at GO ? 02 ? ; Oats, 35 ? 37; Peas, 50 ?, 00. Groceries.?Groceries of all kinds arc yet very high. We continue our former quotations, however, with the remark that a further advance is noticed on Coffee in the foreign market: Sugar, brown, 12.}; refined, 14; crushed and loaf, 14.? > Coffee, Rio, 14 ? Cotton.?At the close of our previous weekly report we left the cotton market active and buoyant, at prices ranging from 9?10^c. During the week now under review no less than three steamers have arrived from Europe, viz: the Washington, Cambria, and the Baltic. By the former the lower grades of cotton were lower, while the better qualities being scarce they were firm at former quotations; by the Cambria the Liverpool market was quiet but steady. Sales for the week of 42,000 bales, including 7,200 to speculators, and 4,500 to exporters; and by the Baltic the news is nearly of a political character, bringing us the intelligence that peace had been formally proclaimed. In our market the demand throughout the whole of the week has been active and good, and prices of all kinds have advanced }?}c on our last quotations ; this advance, however, has been mostly on the grades above middling, while it is true that all kinds have been more or less effected in favor of sellers. The sales of the week comprise 700 bales, and we now quote: Inferior 9?9|; ordinary 9|?93 ; middling 10?10}; good middling 10?"?10|; fairl0J@10?; and choice 11c. Bacon. ?We have no material or quotable change to notice in the bacon market, the stock continues large and fully adequate for the demand. We still quote, however, 10}?103 for hog round ; sides 10}?10|; and haras 11 ?11}, according to the quality of the article. Corn.?We have no ohange to notice in the price of corn, and we therefore continue to quote 70? 75c bushel. Oats.?There is but a feeble demand for oats, and consequently prices continue nominal. We still quote 42?45c "fl bushel. Ptn??The article of Dens is in eood demand. and it freely commands our quotations of 75 to 80 cents per bushel. Flour.?The stock of flour (especially of the low and middling brands) is large, and prices of these grades are tending in favor of buyers. We now quote $7 to S7J for common to good brands, fine family flour $8 to $8J bbl., according to qnality. Fodder.?The supply of fodder on sale has been light throughout the whole of the past week, and it therefore freely commands $1)1 per 100 pounds DptcnwI. The bed stands about 30 inches from the I floor, and is the most convenient of all Presses to make ready the form on. It is adapted to jobbing, or book work, as well as newspaper, and will register as well as any other Cylinder Press. It requires, to wtfrk it, a man to turn the flywheel and a boy to feed the sheets. The Inking Apparatus is very complete, and differs from the apparatus used in Cylinder Presses generally, being more like that used in the Power Platen Presses. Two rollers pass over the form twice to each impression, taking ink for each sheet. A Press of this description for newspaper and jobbing, bed 44 by 28J- inches, with roller mould, roller stocks, ldauket, flying and registering apparatus, &c., complete, will be furnished for $500. If intended for book work chiefly, an extra ink fountain will be furnished for $20. The press, fly wheel, &c.,will weigh about 2000 pounds. The sides, &c., are iron.
