we will soon have law and order and a prosperous State here in the garden, as well a9 in the centre ?f our great Republic. If you will refuse supplies for the army, it will fall to pieces and thus deprive the President of that ten ible instrument of despotism. The army i? indeed at best of no real benefit to the people of the United States, and might be dispensed with or greatly reduced, vastly to the benefit of the public. I b?g you will give this matter earnest consideration. Dittos bp ?ast dwelling's Pail. WtfW jaHBB Columbia Cotton Market. March 26, 1856. The receipts for cotton so far this week have been very light, and consequently the quantity on sale has been light also; the little that has been Bold, however, has been at full and firm prices, viz: 8 0 9J, and choice a shade higher. Charleston Cotton Market. March 25, 1850. There was a very general and active demand for cotton to-day, and the sales, which reached 5,200 bales, may be pat down as the heaviest day's work of the season. The transactions show a vefry full range of prices, and the market closed at the subjoined quotations, viz: Middling 10; Good Middling 10J 0 10*: and Middling to Fair 1OJ01OJ. The Senate adopted an amendment to the Deficiency Bill, appropriating $350,000 for arrears of printing. In the House, Mr. Sherman, of Ohio, was made Chairman of the Kansas Investigating Committee, vice Campbell declined. Wonders will Never Cease. We saw yesterday a live journeyman printer with two gold double eagles in his pocket! Where they came from, how long they will remain there, or wl ore they will go to is more than we can say. But the fact i3 so remarkable that we cannot refrain from chronicling it under our "local."? Carolina Timet. Memphis and Charleston Railroad. The Memphis Bulletin of the 12th inst., learns from the President of the road that the Governor of Alabama has positively refused to permit the Treasurer to pay over the $300,000 on the bill passed by the Legislature of that State, notwithstanding it was passed over his veto. The company, however, has made a negotiation of $250,000 of their company's bonds at Charleston, which enables them to progress with their work rapidly to completion. The eastern division of this road from Tuscumbia to Stevenson, one hundred and twenty-nine milee, was finished on the 10th inst., and trains will be run on that division regularly on and after the 20th instant. South Carolinians for Kanus, During the past season, strenuous efforts have been made to induce Southern people to emigrate to Kansas. Tempting inducements have been held out to young men to settle in the new Territory, and we observe that large numbers have concluded to try their fortunes in that land of promise and piebald politicians. Among the first to move iu this matter was the cbivalric State of South Carolina. The Kansas "breeze" hae stirred the Palmetto branches, and aroused the spirit of such men as followed Marion through the swamps in the dark days of the Revolution. Yesterday we had an interview with Captain W. B. Brewster, who had just arrived from Charleston, with a company of nineteen stout and intelligent young men, en route for Kansas. These men are not mere adventurers, but mechanics, physicians, lawyers, civil engineers and merchants, who design locating in Kansas for the purpose of following their occupations, and making it their permanent home. We learn that another party of twenty-five, from the same State, will be here in a day or two. As far as we can judge, they are just such men us Kansas requires at this time. They intend starting te-morrow for Kansas.?St. Louis paper. Kansaiu The editor of the New York Tribune, who is now in Washington, says he ha3 information from a source he deems reliable, that the Administration has ordered the arrest of all the members of the Free State Government of Kansas, and that President Pierce believes they are all in prison ere this. The following is from a late number of the Kansas Herald: "Gov. Shannon has returned to the Territory. He has all the troops at Fort Leavenworth and Fort Riley, about 1200, subject to his cull. The laws of the Territory will be sustained, I despite the efforts of the fanatics to agitate and | keep up strife. Col. Summer, at Fort Lpavec- j worth, has received his instructions, to keep his | troops in readiness subject to the call of Gov. Shan- I non." Commercial gcprtincni. Yorkville Markets.
