From the great length of a detailed statement
of the receipts, aggregates only are given; but
reference is hereby made, and also may be had by
any person interested, to the Treasurer's book in
possession of the present Council, which contains
the names and amounts received, and also, the
receipts for the amountB paid out. ^
The indebtedness of Town Council on the bonds
issued by the Town Council of 1853, and which
are now all past due, balance on said bonds, $1,214
70 besides interest thereon from the first of .
February 1850. The Town Council of 1855 issued
three bouds to Win. M. Kerr, amounting in j
the aggregate to $400 27, balance due him on a
contract given to the said Win. M. Kerr by the
Town Council of 1854, for work done on Liberty- !
street; the said bonds payable on the first day of
January 1858, with interest from the 16th of June
1855. The whole indebtedness of Town Council
is Sixteen hundred and fifteen dollars and three cents
($1015 03) besides interest as aforesaid.

IN issuing the Prospectus of the twenty-second
volume of the SOUTHERN LITERARY MESSENGER,
the Proprietors rely solely 011 the encouraging
letters and promises of the friends of
the Messenger to aid them in extending its circulation,
and they beg to assure tho public that
no exertions will bo remitted on their part to maintain
the high character of the work, and to challenge
the patriotism of all who value sterling litcry
merit For Twenty-one years the Messenger
has endeavored to reflect faithfully the Southern
mind, while disdaining all narrow and sectional
views, and has been alone among the monthly periodicals
of America in defence of the peculiar
Institutions of the Southern States. To this office
it will still be devoted, and will be prompt to
repel assaults upon the South, whether they come
under the specious garb of fiction, or in the direct
form of anti-slavery pamphlets. At this critical
juncture, while our enemies are employing literature
as their most potent weapons of attack, the
Southern people will surely not withhold their
encouragement from a work whose aim it shall be
to strike blows in their defence.

readers with Reviews, Historical and Biographical

Critiques, and Papers on the Army, Navy, and
