hence the importance of South Carolina emerging from the proud isolation 'which she has occupied for so many years, and of taking that position in the National Convention to which the intellect of her sons and the commanding weight of her character among the southern people eminently entitle her.? It seems strange to us, we must confess, that this gldlant State, which on every occasion throws her suffrages for the democratic candidate for President and rouses in her behalf, by the disinterested magnanimity of her position, the ardent feelings of the democracy of other States, should refuse to aid her sisters of the South, and to encourage her sisters of the North, with her presence in those conventions upon the decisions of which so many grave interests depend. It is, indeed, to the credit and to the hon| or of the democratic party that, while South Carolina has not mingled in the councils which have selected our candidates, yet that in all cases the principles there avowed have generally met the approbation of her investigating an impartial judgment.? And why, at the present moment, when the advice of the best friends of the constitution is needed to (protect that instrument against the efforts of its worst woes?why should not South Carolina come forward and take part in the deliberations at Cincinnati when the democratic party meets in national \ convention ? We confidcntlv anticinate that the ac tion of that convention will meet the approval of Sonth Carolina. It is easy to see that, so far as regards the doctrines there to be laid down, they will be such as the entire South can approve, such as will bring the democracy together as one unbroken brotherhood. It would be a cap-sheaf to the noble column if South Carolina could be present when our candidate is selected and our creed proclaimed to add her voice to the ceremony which announces both to the democracy of the American Uunion. Democratic National Convention. The Democratic National Committee assembled at L Washington on the 8th January, and, with entire v unanimity, Resolved, That the Democratic National Conven tion of 1856 meet in the city of Cincinnati, at 12 o'clock, M., on the first Monday of Juno next. The Baltimore- National Convention of 1852, adopted the following resolution as to the number of delegates to be chosen : Resolved, That, in constituting future national conventions of the Democratic party, in order to secure the respective rights of tho States to their relative representation in such conventions, each State shall be entitled to twice the number of delegates that it has votes in the electoral college, and no more; and that the Democratic National Committee, in making arrangements for the next National Convention, provide such number of seats therein for each State, and secure the same to the delegates elect." B It is required, with a view to the proper arrangc* ments of seats of members, that the delegates from the several States or districts of the United States to the next National Convention, forward to Hon. A. P. Flour.?The demand continues good at the following rates: For sacks, $3.5O0$3.75; for barrels, from $8 to $8.25. Grain.?The demand for all kinds of grain is buoyant at the following rates: Wheat $1.50; Peas I 62J; Corn 60; Oats 37$. ! I Columbia Market. January 14. Cotton.?Our report for the week ending on the 6th inst, closed on a good demand for the article, at full and firm prices, with a feeling deoidedly in favor of sellers. The week just brought to a close opened with the same good feeling and active demand, and up to Tuesday evening prices were very full and firm. ? These accounts, although somewhat contradictory, had a favorably effect on prices in our market, and as we stated in our report of the following day, prices advanced l@\c on former quotations, bringing fair cotton up fully to 9}c. During the throe last days of the week the market dragged heavily, and owing to the inclemency of the weather the receipts were light and the demand dull. The sales of the week comprise about 800 bales, and we now quote: Inferior 8@8J; ordinary 8$@8J; middling 8?(o,.8f; fair 8?@9J; and choice 9 3-16@9Jc. Bacon.?The demand for bacon is flat and prices are looking down. We now quote for hog round, by the quantity, 12J@13|; sides 13; and hams 13 @14 Jc, according to the qality of the article. It is perhaps proper, that I should inform the Voters of York District, that I am not a candidate for re-election for the office of Tax-Collector at the ensuing election. Having changed my business, and removed to the country, I cannot in justice to myself, without to some extent sacrificing my private interests, consent to enter the list us a competitor for the office. The same reason would apply, if I should be so fortunate as to be re-elected. I have heard it whispered in certain quarters, that I had withdrawn in favor of a particular candidate in the field. I can only say that such a report is without the slightest foundation. There ore a number of aspirants for the office, any of whom would discharge the trust honestly and faithfully and to the entire satisfaction of the District. I repeat it that I am only induced to take this step, because my private affairs imperatively demand it. I cannot retire, without making sonic faint acknowledgement of the debt of gratitude I owe my i fellow citizens of York District, for their confidence I and support. Their promptness in the discharge of i their duty, has greatly lightened my labors and rendered my official intercourse with them pleasant and agreeable. I shall carry with me into my retiremtiit, and cherish with the most grateful recollections, the feelings such circumstances are so well calculated to inspire. L. P. SADLER.
