Nabbed, A colored individual, laboring uin der the strong infliueino of John Bar lycorn, was nabbed by the police Friday afternoon, and deposited in the place set apart for all such. A most heinous murder was com mitted on Boar Creek, near Ridge way, last Tuesday night, on the per son of Charles Crayon, alias Charles Johnson, by Shadraok Harris, both ;olored. The particulars as we have hoard them are substantially these : For some time past Shadrack Harris has been living' with Charles Crayon's daughter as his wifo-and Uharles Crayon desired Harris to be legally married to her-whercuponit a quarrel ensued, and Harris drew a knife, and stalbbed Crayon in the region of the heart, from the cflccts of which lie died in a few minutes. Harris up to this writing is in the woods. Polluted Atmosphore. It is said by scientifle men that "the decomposition of a single potato or a n ilted turnip will breed dizeise if the vapors of the decaying substance are confined to the walls of a house." The .same is said of decaying substan ces in streets, lots and yards. The va Pors arising fiom manure und rubbish piles, will so impregnato the atmor, phere as to make it unhealthy, and thereby spread disease and death. This is the cause of so many diseases breaking out that bafile the skill of physicians. Filthiness causes de struction wherever it exi~ts. Grceley Stock. A bet of $1,000 was offered in Town Wednedsay that Greeley would be elected, but no takers were found. The Liberals in Columbia propose forming a Giceley club at an early day. inmidreds of Western Republicans are flocking to the Greeley stan-dard every day. Ex-Gov. Blair, of Michi gan, and Cen. Palmer, of Illinois, are at their head. Lieut. Gov. Pinchback, colored, of Louisiana, has declared for Greeley, and will stump his State for the Libe. ral nominees. From every quarter comes chevring news of the progress of the campaign, the oflico holders are panic stricken, and victory is already perching upon the banner of Reunion and Re form. White-washame. At this season of the year, when epideni.ies ate lil:ely to prevail, and mtia~smatic iniflutcees so easy to spring up, repeated recourse should be had to every kind of disinfectants, to puri. fy the atmosphere, tind cointeraetthe nexious vapors arising fiom decayed ainimial avd vegetable matter. N,-th ing is simpler or more ellicacious as a disitfectant tl:an littlo white-wash. Every out-house and fence int a close yard should be kept coated with thi., amixture durittg the sunimmer mnonths, particularly in town, whtere the circu 1attion of' pu~re air is so much obstruct ed and hindered, anid the accum nula. t iott of umiasmta so readily 'orought a bout. It is cleat', con vincing, and conclusive to any unbias ed mtittd, and is worthy of more than a passing tnotio. Too Much Land. The followitng paragraph from anm exch-n tge is worth muoro thtan a mere corner in a news column. "CIt is said that when miehanies haive landl, thtey generally give it bet ter cultivation titan farmers and con segnently have tmoro grapes, straw bctrntes, andi watermtelons, and earlier potatoes and cucumbers. They 'de vote more care antd labor to a small spaice, and reap a larger profit fromt it. If any one will look at the immense crops a very small garden will often produce for a family, and compare it with the very little crops fronm very large farms, they should need no bet ter inducement to enrich their soil hightly. T1hte great point to remember is thtis, that labor is thte groat heavy item in farm ing ; but that it takes no more labor to farm rich ground. We have, as it were double crops with the same single labor. ;ohool Appropriation.
