Wednesday Morning, Oct. 26, 1871, StspenNIovi of Vlabeas CorpusN It will not be % matter of surpris< to this community that a suspensior of the writ of habeas corpus has beer declared in Fairfield. The prelimi nary proclamation of President Grani prepared the way for this measure and the prompt following up of tia first order to imaginary troops to dis band. by numerous arrests of peacca ble oitirns, warns us what we may expect in this section. In view of the great provocations and of the mani fest design of this procedure, we woul counsel our people to the exereise of a greater pationce and prudence that we have yet been called upon to ex. hibit. Resistance to such oppression an natural as it might be, would best subsorve tho interests of those wi< inaugurated this condition of things Emboldened by a resistance upor which the whole power of the Goner al Government would be brought t< boar, with what fiendish gleg woul they press on to spoliation of ou property, the insult of our familioe and the final confiseation of our lands 'To our people then we repeat, "13t patient," even though by cruel an tyrannical measures we be torn fron our families and thrown into th( common jail. The ReIgn Of 'Ter'or. Our advices from Spartanburg an York Counties depiot a terrible stat of affairs there, on account of the nu morous arrests under the operation o the Ku Klux law. Since the sus pension of the privilege of habea. cot )u, the United States Marshals, su: ported lby the military, have bee mnakinig arrests with a high band, an hiasoe instituted a perfect reign of tei tor. innocent, unoffending eitizen aire dragged from their homes at th~ dead hour of night, andi thrown int j ili with comnmon felons. We hav heard of men bein torn from thel families at midnight without bein allhowed to maake any preparations fe their journey, or provide for thei loved ones during their absene forced to ride tenl, twenby and thirt 1mil es, ad then confined in loathsom dlungeonis. And these outrages ar committed lby a Government tha boaasts of being "the bost the worl ever saw." What a comnmentar upon Rlepuablican Rcconsfrauction i lhe re fI etioan that in a ti me of pro fomad pieaic, the rigors and severitie of martial law are visited upon a pec plc who appear to have incurredh tha dis~plouasure of the White liouse ty rant, simply because they will no submit to the rub of the set of thieve and plande~lrers that the fortunes o war have cast into their midst. We havo as yet hlad no arrests i1 our (Countty, andl certainly hope ou peop~le will escape the cruelties of th Ku Klu tx Inmqu isition, as wve are pleat e'd toocnll it. In casae the invaders alay moro int our conmuntinity, we simply ad vise on citizenls to stuand im, and submit t the oppressiona with becoming dignit~ and uniwavering' spirit, ald keep ailiv the thought that the present state o affairs cannot last always, and that a (lay of reckoning is not far distant. NigIIN of slae TinueN. It may be0 said with a great relianea upon01 the assertion, "that we lire il eventful imes.~ Tfhe world continues to revolve, ant we are maiking rapid progress on it surface, iu all the varied condition, of life, ini whlich a kind l'rovidene, has placed us. In some countries ii tile old world, characterizid by eiv ilization, the wvelfare of the hum.atia fa mnily is promoted by thae adminis tration of good laws, enforced, if nee<t be, by standinug armies, and Rloya edicts. But how is it in the Unitei States ? the boasted land of freedon and indepnncenn. nh .os .o mentous events, seem to hang on the "ipse dixit" of one man, whose ignor ance and -want of statesmanship, stamps him as r Despot, and. would. be-tyrant, actuated by an egotistic ambition, Jparty spirit, self-aggran disoment, and sectional hatred Op pression, on the part of the Chief Magistrate of the so-called Union of States, is making a rapid stride, to subdue every sentielit of patriotisil that ever warmed the heart, or fired the breast of a free and iddp.oudent people. Corruption with Tutolerance wears a bolder front, uder his ad. ministration. The law-muaking pow era at Washington are at his bidlding, and his servile minions all over the States are over ready, to enforce his orders, against one section of the country, particularly ; whilst his own party secures undeservedly his conii. denee and support, in the mal-admin istration of all our publio affairs, whether Executive, Judicial or Leg islative. "If ignorance is bliss, 'tis folly to be wise,"-and the adLge Ip. plies with full force and power, to him, who misrules the affairs of this great nation. There is however a dim twilight in the futuro. Among honest men there is a proper conception of the impend. ing danger ; a fellow fooling among the true and good, both North and South, to prepare at least, if not to resist'the advance of evil; old politi cal issues are, many of them dead buyond recovery, but better princi pals are presented in a new light, and are taking hold upon the public mind -"teform" is the watchword of the day. The unexampled wiasto of the fruits of honest industry by those in oAlce, must be robuked and prevented, or a large portion our of people will soon become bankrupt. The great burden of taxation, which has been imposed upon those, least able to bear it, must be more wisely adjusted, to comport with the condition and interests of the country. Official defaulters who live by plundering the people, must give way, and intelligent and honest men, must be found, and placed before the country to fill their places, or we will be totally ruined in a moral, as we haive been to a certain extent in a fi. nancial point of view. So long as dishonest men are in office, we must expect defaleations rind robberies every where. 8teate and County ofl. cars must be called to a strict account before the law. We appeal to jus 3 tico and common senso ; we appeal to every hone.t citizen. We appeal f to the newstpapors throughout the country everywhero ; Conservative . ' if the struggle was close and hard f ly fought, and the issues on both sidei warmly expounded by able orators, notwithstanding the fact that our Denmocratie friends in those Stateu 3 had conveyed to us through the news. -journals strong hopes of their success, we were prepared for their defeat, >and consequently not surprised at it. X Whenever a party discards principles that have beeni its very life since the existonee of our gaveu nment, thu4 at tempting to falhify its own secord, 'we predlict its downgf.,il aind dissolu tion, and if the Dem "ocratic pa rty expeet to shoulder the "Now Depar. turo" principle diurinig comning ee. tions, we venture the puedietioni that it will meet with a Waiteu hoe defeat, if not suffer a gencral fslhrng-to. There are eortrin immuutale prin ciplos upon which depend the exist ence of the Democratic party, and if these are steadily and fearlessly ad. hered to, its success at no distant day, is certain and assured, but any do. parture from which will inevitably cause defeat, utter and complete. We wit nesbed two sessions, expecting each time to find the galleries crowded, but on neither ocea.ion were more than fifty spectators of all colors pres. ent.
