Even good gardeners often may that if a tree is healthy, it may be permitted to bear all it will t but that kind of tree is very rarely seen. About three mionths ago the State Department at Washington received a few pounds of the cundurango from the government of Ecuador, through its minister to this country, with a communication describing it. But little importa noe was attached to the matter at first and it might have been neglected altogether had not Dr. Bliss been sent a small quantity of the plant by the Ecuadorian Minister, who hap. pened to be under his care. Though skeptical as to its virtues, he began to use it in his practice, and obtained such surprising results that the limni ted.supply of the remedy in Wabhing ton was soon divided among eager ap plicants. About fifteen cases of can cer have been treated with it in this country, and in all its uso has been attended by a wonderful improve ment of the Patient, though the ne cessarily small doses given have boon insufficient tg prod uce its full effects. Mrs. Matthews, the mother of Vice President Colfax has been nearly our ed of a cancer which it, was feared would end her life within the year although sho had taken less than five ounces of the oundurango when the supply gave out. The wife of George U. Gorham, Scretary of the Senate, and a lady in Utica, to whom sonic of the remedy was sent by 8ec ertary Fish, are among the other suf ferers whom a few ounces have nearly cured. Thie mode of admiinistrating the plant is very simple, it being merely steeped in boiling water, and the inifusion taken internally. The Government has seat an agent to Euador to obtain a supply of thbis wonderful plant. Leached Ashes as a Manure. An agricultural Journal of Germa ny calls renewed attention to the great value, as manure, of soap-boil ers' leached ashes, which, as is well known, are prepared by mixing weed ashes with fresh burnt lime, and boiling or leaching the two together for the piurpose of obtaining a caustic lye. Although the soluble salta are removed from these ashes, thse is4 soluble parts remain, namely, the ear bonates, suiphates, and phosphates, principally lime salte, accompanied generally by a little caustip lime, Experienee baa shown that there is no substance equal to leached ashes of ti kind for manure, not excepting even the richest guanos ; the vegeta tion of the cereals becoming broader than common by its use, and the stalks more tubular, while the leaves grow of a dark, bluisha green. The value of this application is aeen mere particularly in meadows, where curi ously enough, nearly all the ordinary grass disappears in consequence and instead of it a thick vegetation of red clover is met with, which will be re newed year by year for a long time, without add itinal supply.
