To a Bird. Sweeter thou than all the poets That have tu.g ! Mellow are the lyaicd ringing From) thy tongue ! Wondrous warblur. robed in feathers Jet and Gold ! IPrecious gtews, the tiniest ca kets Surely hold. Vainly may earth's boasted artists Hiope or sigh, F'or to deck their loveliest pictures With such d3e ! Who of mortal asters .ever Wro'nght such things ? Mado a golden song, and gave .it Flabhing wings ? Think we, as we bear thy singing, All day long, Odny Go.d the Irtist, painteAt, Such a song I I will weave a little romance For thee, bird. Frou the walls of fairy legends I have heard. 'Once a Peri, doomed to penance For a wrong, Sought forgiveness of her monarch In a song Wrought a strain of wildest mueio Rare and sweet, Laid it low amid the violots At her feet. There beneath a not of dew-drops, On the ground, Sang the music like a spirit Jewel-bound. Through the world the Per! wandered From her lay. Found a sad, lone bird, enchanted By a Fay, Bhe brought her song and sang it To the bird, And raised its voice and warbled What it heard. Music of the bird and Peri, Echoes woke, And the cruel Fiay's enchanting Bond was broke. And the king forgave the Peri Hecr great wrong, And with the gold ie ecked the singer Of the soing. Thou the songster that I sing of, Thine the lay, Cheering the disual moments Of the day ; Filling all the vacant placea In miy heart. Golden singer, stay beside me, Ne'er dopart I Sandy Uoh and their ihtiingecient. The character and treat ment ofsan. dy soils are in almost every partiou Jar the revorso of those of liny. They do not pOsAo-s the property ot' adhe. sivenesw, and they have but little af fluity for water, which escapes from them almost as soon ats it falls. They have but. a light hold 111)011 the ma riures which are diiffusod through them ; they itei loose in their texture, at( anmay be pl'wed at any time with equal advantage, provided the sow ing or planting is to follow iumedi ately. As olay soils are much benefitted by a mixture of sand, so likewise are sandy soils greatly improved by the addition of clay, ini a much higher degree, to add sand to clay, yet ihe addition of a few loads of the stiltTest clay to a light sand, would in almost every instance mucll more than coi pensate for the trobule and expense. Fort this purpose, thle clity should b~e thinly spread in aut un .pon award land previously plowed and the win tern's frost will eff~etually separate the particles. It should thon be hiar rowed thoroughly and3( deeply ini the spring, and subsequenitly piowod if lneeossary. Such a dressing on a light, ecrawling land is meo than equivalent to any equal quantity of the best manure, and wvill he permanent in its effects. Clay and sand are neocersary to eaeh other as they contain qualities which are essenmial to a good soil; and that will always be found the best which has the proper proportion of each,. 8andy soils are improved by the frequent use of a heavy roller ;it cannot be usedl too often. TIhuey re quire to lbe made more compact, and any treatment that secures this ob jet will be advatitaiteous. im to, by its chemical action on the constituents of soils, while it sepa r ates olay ren ders san d more adhe. shes ; and when cheaply obtained, it s always a profitanbe dressing for sandy soils, to the full amount that it may requnire. Gypsum, in consid erable quantities, has an effect simi lar to the lime, both on clay and sand ; ad when added in small por 'tions prodluces a striking increase in the crops of sandy soils, Cloy marls containing either ear bonie, sub phate or phosphate of limoie arc of great value to sandy soils. Equally beneficial arc ashes, leached or un leached, peat ; or vegetable manures -of any kind. Some calcareous sands containing a large proportion of limaj like those of Ehypt and extensive re gions iin the Baurbary States, will prod uce luxuriantly, if supplied with a alight additions of manure and anl abundance of water. Sandy soils ean never be profitably cultivated till they have acquired sulhicient compact ness and fortility to sustain a good g'owth of grass or clover, nnd whoa once brought to this condition they are among the most valuable. They are at all times easily plowed sad worked ; they req1uire no drain. hng, and though htght and dIry, are quick ahd kindly soils, giving an im mrnediatto and full return for the labor and mannre be.,towed upon them. W ben in conditioin to produce gr ass sheep arc admirably adopted to pure. serie and anyment their fertility, and by their incessant mligratiosns over it, their sh~arp hoofs pack the s'urfae closely prod uciig the same er. feet as the .roller.
