t'nreless Shooting on the Frontier. A letter from &4 eX-post 0'.ap1.1in to- ihe New ,York Tiibune, dated Footeville, Wis., June 5, says. On the uarch of our, rebi ment from Sioux Clv, lowo, to Fort Sully, D. T., we wer e overtuken hy -a young faonticvma1, w'hoe rarents live in the tiorthern pait of the Territory. ile hud been with Gen. Sible3's ex pedition, bad been recently discharg ed, and was now on his wiay hoje, With us he could have company and rations. He had his horse, rifle, and opuxalry accoutrements with him. Aher we had gone into camp one evening, and supper was over, the boysgathered in groups, as uasual, to enjoy a chat. In the group around our frontiersman a discussion arobe on the respective powcr and accuracy of their pieces. This young man praised his piece above all others for lhng range and accuracy. Just then one of our men saw what he thought was a Buffalo, or deer, crossing a bute, about a inile off, and obailenged him.to shoot at that, But lie said it was neither a deer nor a buffalo, bsut an Indian, and he thought he cpuid hit him, or at any rate he could scare him. Ie drew a bead and fied ; the object was mean to spring up i the air, and some one exclaimed, "You hit him." Ile replied, very coolly : "Don't know ; an Indian would jump that way and then full down if ho heard the whiz of a ball, just to prevent your firing again." Somte of our boys cauph't hisspir it,'and said "it was only an Indian, iny. how," but most of theni were sihocked that a man, who never done them any harm should be shot at in so cold blooded a manner. At roll call one of our soldiers were mais.siig. An. other of the company said lie fell out at a stream about two miles back to catch a fish for supper ; another si id lie was down wit h Comparny K, so the in. giry was paEsed over unanswered, TI e sdzgeant, however, who shared the shelter tent with the young man who h4d shot at the Indian, was restless all night, and could not sleep for thinking that perhap4 it was young P., the misssing man, that was shot. lie watched for pe.'p of day, then woke the young man to go up the bute and see if he had hit that Indian. They w6nt, and when they drew near enough to see the object on the ground dist inctly, the frontici-iran, who was ahead, threw up his hands and ex claimed, 6-ly God, it-'s a soldier !" It was the lost comrade, a quiet, petoeable youth of about nineteen years of nge. The I all had passed right through his head. The young man who shot him was put under arrest, depobitions taken, a ad when we reached the river was s ut, by the first down boat, under guard, to Sioux City. Having been diacharged, he wasa civilian, and we had to hand him over to the civil au thority. iad lie been in the service, we could have dealt with him under martial law. lie remained there un til the grand jury tint, when they decided they had no jurisdiction no bill found. Ilad he shot an In. dian we could not have done any thing with him, as an Indian is not a etiz.-n. A trader who has been for several years in the Indian country, told me if it had been an [udian,, our regiment would have lost nmany a scalp as the penalty of the wickedness of that one mani. This would have led to riprisalP, arid then there would hfe been numerous accunts of "In dian coutrages." liercips. F T vi PA.NSa OF CHOL.FRA MoR Piu.--I.ke a decoetion of pig-weed, green or dry.
