Mr. Fulton, author of a wmk on Vtauoh culure, in his chapter on in B:ets, truly says: The Borer (XEgeria exitiosa), is the nost -courmo, as it is the most t.roublesome enemy1 v of the peal. . * * "But it mut be debtroyed at all events, There must be tio tiuce, no mercy, if' you wish to save your trees. If you leave even one, it will probably be the death of your tree ; for it will cut, and eat away, until it will destroy it, The greate t Cero should be taken to remove all. Sometimes (1uite a number will be found in on1 tr(o. Five and six are not. at all unfrequent, and even more will sometines be found."' Then ful lows a dzeeription of the methods of destroying the borer. I then tried coal tar thickoned with wood ashses, to the consistency of paint or cream, and ap plied with a paint brush around the biaso of each trea, to the lieight of six or eight iilies. This did not. kill the tie worms that wero already inl the trees, but was quite useful in preven tin , the moti from depositing their evgg, if the application was mado carly in eimi, or jit before they comIienced thoir michii I; but the re. medy was not compliely effectivo, bceaus tie growti of the trees b iig jiuite i apid in summ r, the otiter bai k wold expand and form littlo fissum es, ill w hich the insect could deposit its es driirg .JTuly ind August, safe fi om the ell-cts of the coal tir ; and even a scoi appI lication wouhil not reach them all. Wodnesday Morning, June 28, 1871, Con11tItIoun of' Free N4C 1aa*l In FIair rn1eId. The School Conuniisioner of Fair. field County has courteously furnished us with an elaborate table of tho num ber of free schools in the Co)unty, when formed, by whom taught, &., up to April lst. The table is too long for publication, amu N-v would studi4y it. We, therefore, prefer to give a rew statistics from it ourselves. I'ihere are 33 teachers employed, 15 in the white free elools, andl 18 in the colored. 'ien of the teachers of the white mchools are of the first grale, and receive $50 per month ; live are (if the se-mid grade, and re ceive $35 per month. 'leso fifteeno teachers, i) to A pril Ist, had taught 358 white pupils for two months and olev n fifteenths of a month, at it cost of $1,500. There are 18 1cachers employed in the colored free sehools ; eight of the first grade ($50 per month i) five of the second grade ($35 per month ;) and live of the hi id ($!5 per month.) Theso cighteen tenchors, up to April Wt, had tauight, 82:3 colored scholars for three months and seven.ninths of a nouith, at a cost. of $2,323. To run all these schools from April to tho end of this month will have t, ken eleven huidred dollarsa inopth, the whito schools taking $675, and the e.i -red o 125 per month. That is, tI! V St Of Lle white pupils is $1.88 0 ach, per month ; and of the colored pupils 51 cents each, per m~onth. From a careful study of the tabile we believe just ice is being donie to al1l ptart ies, th ough se ven do)liars is hbi ng spent on the white child ron to e very four spent on the colored child ren. This is owing to tho white schoolsI conitaining a far less number of pu pils, and the pay of the toechers lbe inig necessariiy indIependenit of the numiinboy of the pupils in the school. It. has cost us somec labor to get the above simaple statemenits from Ilhe ta ble before us. The reader ein now indulge his reflectiona as to the pili cy of the mat ter of free-schoois for himiself. Wec believe gooid can be gotten out of it by wisdom ; but to tal indiffeorene and blind prejudice may lose the good wve else might gain, by rcfusintg to attemipt. We feel sure, 'for exatmpjle, that a first-class graded pub)lic school for white chiil. d1i0n can be established in every County towyn of the State. One must., of course1 be established for colored childten too. But for ten years at least, the relatSi e tcost will be just wihiat it is noow-$7 to the whites, and $4 to the blacks ;and these olb' len do)llars paid in- the form of a ta:x, will do more, even for the whites, than (ho *20 af, least n~ow spent in the shape of tuitiott.
