AN EDITOR' BED. In a certain village the editor of a local newspaper had a room at the hotel. - Being absent one night, and tle house being crowded, the landlord put a.stratnger in his bed. The nett morning the followat'lines were found in the room' I slept in an editor's bed tit alght, And others may say what they .pln/e; say there's one ditot- in the i'1d That, certainly takes his ease. When I thought, of my humble cot, away, I could not suppress a sigh, But thought, as I rolled in the feathery tiest, How easily editors lie. The editor, after some inquiries of the landlord. made the following addition: The chap whose form has rested here, And left his copy behind, For a bad impression should b6 locked up, As the cut is most unkind. liehold a prqof of how be lies: In the mer ing he went; aw: y, And like many that use an editor's sheet, ias forgotton the bill to pay. LONG AGO. As through the poplar's gusty spires Tho March wind sweeps and sing , I sit beside the hollow flre, A,td dream faroillar things; Old memories wake, faint echoes make A murmur of dead Springs. Ah, daye when life had aim and meaning, What buried years ago I When friend-now shallow intervening Was friend. and foe was foo; Whon life had youth, and love had truth, And heart had faith to show. Somewhere now woods are green and tender; Somewhere hedgerows are flled 11 ith buds; somewhere, if winds, befriend her, The thrush begins to build ; Somewhere no fears has Spring, no tears For hopes that March has killed. C., March 11.-The excitement over the latest intelli Ponce received here from Washington is intense. Senator Leslie, on the re oAipt to.day of the information of the elate made up at Washington for the Federal offices in South Carolina, committed his application for the United States Marshalship, signed by the Governor, the judges and members of the Legislature to the flames. The news is that Mr. Epping is to re tain the office of United States Mar shal, Mr. Trott the Postmastership, Mr. Geddings the office of United States Treasurer, while Mr. G. W. Clark is to be made Collector of In ternal Revenue, Mr. L. T. Potter Col lector of the Port of Charleston, Mr. Herrick Assessor of Internal Revenue for the Third Congressional District, and a number of others obnoxious to the party here installed into other Federal offioes. Those who fought the hardest for the eleotion of U. S. Senators Sawyer and Robertson are to be left out in the cold, The proprie ty of holding an indignation meeting early next week, and asking the pres ent United States Senators to resign, was freely discussed among the mem bers of both houses. It was asserted of Mr. Trott that he was active oppo nent of the present system of recon struction and a warm supporter of President Johnson. Mr. Clark is de nounced as having done his utmost to break down and bring into contempt the Republican party in Charleston, having Mr. Potter and Mr. Goddings as his chief aide-do-oamps and tools. Herriek is alleged to be a Democrat of the straightest sect. The "friends" are partioularly bitter on Mr. Sawyer, who, they say,,has betrayed the trust reposed in him and gone over, horse, foot and dragoons. Leslie swears that he never know Mr. Sawyer or the rest of the representatives in Wash ington, and that they have betrayed the friends of reonstruction in South Carolina. In the Rouse, to-day, Crows pre. sented a copy of the preamble and rosoltitions passed by a meeting held by the representatives of the counties of Edgefleld, Abbeville, Laurens and Union, and in connection therewith, introduced the following concurrent resolution, which was adopted and or dered to be sent to the Senate : Resolved, by the House of Repre sentatives, the Senate concurring, That a committee, consisting of five members of the House and-members of the Senate, be empowered to pro. ceed to investigate the charges made against Governor Scott for giving his testimony in the Ooitested election case of Messrs.
