We are jiot so imich interested in knowing the steps of their seduction, us in the fact that American citizens; wearing American uniforms, and having taken the oath of allegiance, and Knowing the death penalty for mutiny in the face of the enemy did become puch muti neers. The spirit of mutiny as sumed such dungcrous propor tions until their officers had to temporize with it rather than crush it out. — The most alarming feature'of this is npt from a militarysfand- poinfc, as that our boasted Ameri can civilization furnishes ^s fertile soil for Bolshevism as Russia. As cigarette smokers would say "we have the makings for it” right herd. The Bolshe vists of Europe are pouring Here their money to support k.-We greater fact is that '‘with the abnormally high prices for cotton goods people will buy the cheapest they ♦ can get. THE FIELp OF HONOR. This war ha9 brought many surprises as to the most danger ous arm of the service. In the earlier stages of the war when the allies had not learned how to owereomo the resistance the lnadiiuo gun seryice wa9 so fatal that it was chi led the sui cide cTlifr. Afterward when medical corps bv their splendid loyalty to the demands made upon them made the supreme sacrifice in many dfcses it was shown at that time their casual ties were the highest in the service. When artillery positions were located by the .enemy they were usuallv wiped off the map at wholesale with high casualties The air service was i n popular -estimation *tv yiury dangerous arm of the service because mauy who. were iu it were careless or uutraind, and the most of the accidents oc curred on the training field- The following recent despateth has been based-oil complete re cords and therefore accurate. Washington, April Hi.—The infantry suffered more twice the ea-unlities in proper tion to numbers of anv otlie branch of tlie army, according to a statistical report made pub lic today by the War Depart ment. Battle deaths among the commissioned personnel in the infantry was 173 per thousand and for both officers a;ul men 131).7 per thousand. This com pares with the average for tin* eutire army of 6).U for botL officers and men. I he average farmer knows .that lie can mhko more from had in this county on good roads, cottois than from any othg.r_fai in It has passed from a meie luxury to a necessity. In many cases it has become an injury to the Sabbath day, a ij.il to Divine worship. . MUTINY IN RUSSIA. The reading public lias been served in the past few years with fr&sli evidences of the savage possibilities of human nature. We simply refused to believe that any set or nation of men could be capable of such excesses as were charged against the Germans in Belgium and France. Bolshevism was a new name for our comprehension. When we read of what it was doing in various Russian cities we explained it on the ha§is that it appealed only to the ignorant and benighted classes of a nation that had been do\wT* trodden for so long on czarism. When it feund in Germany-such leaders as Liebknecht and Rosa Luxembourg^ "and in America Debs, Nearing and the Indus trial workers of .the world we set them down as either un balanced cranks or unscrupul ous politicians, we were sure that such heresies could never find lodgement iu the heartsof loyal Americans. The news of last week brings the stunning report that some American soldiers on the Archangel front in Russia -had become so cor rupted by Rolshevishm that product, and at the same time he knows that he is being cheated by some one out of a part of his just- profits iu the matter. There--is too wide a variation in what the fanner receives for the raw cotton and what he has to pay for the cloth when it is woven by the mills-. The cotton exchanges blame the mills, while-the -mills blame the gambling features of the cotton, exchanges. At any rate the 'farmer is defrauded. Our town judgment is- that if the producers of cotton could form as strong an organization as has been formed by those who sell and weave the cotton that they could demand as good prices a!s are demanded of the farmer when he buys the cloth-, . The average farmer however cannot be persuaded, nor cjui he be driven. He would rather follow his individual judgement- than to get liis just rights. A reference to the market re port of Charleston for Saturday reveals the fact that while middling cotton is used a9 a basis yet the higher grades of strict and good middling bring only one half a cent more than middling. When we come to the lower grades in their order we find that strict low middling is worth two cents less, low middling five cents less, strict good ordinary eight cents less, while good drfdiliary Brings teu and one half cents NOTICE.
