RECENT LEGISLATION Continued from first page. that each and every one is nec essary in the interest of the peo ple; that all advanced commu nities need good roads; hut every conservative business man knows that there are many good things in themselves, and vet if too many of them are purchased at oue time the aggregate will bankrupt the purchaser. Again, some of the proponents of such heavy appropriations sav that the State is much more wealthy than at that time; it is believed that tile present State levy is made on a property, val nation-of about throe hundred and seventy million dollars. Tilt State's taxable property in 1800 was three hundred and sixteen million of dollars exclusive of hIavos—an inciease of about sev enteen per cent—yet the State taxes today .v**» mora than dou- ble'that of the day* oi 1*71. Again, suppose a muu in Barn well has $1,000 in the savings department of one of the banks. His interest on that is $40.00. lie makes an honest return of that money for taxation under the present taxation, state, coun ty and municipal (more than 40 mills), he will pay in taxes all of that forty dollars, and then will have to borrow money to com- p'ete the payment of hio-taxe*. And yet in the face of that it is proposed to bond the State for $25.000,000.00 and add $1,000,000.00 to the burden‘of the already overburdened tax payers in additional interest. But what the answer to that? They say the automobile owner will pay it all. —, xjrr-*- Mr. Taxpayer, do not anow yourself to be deluded. When these bonds get into the hands of innocent purchasers and the courts decide—as they probably will—that the debt for good roads is a debt for the whole people, and cannot be devolved on the-shoulders of only a class of the people ; or when the fad for automobiles has faded away and the most of the automobilec are in the scrap heap, on as- H MONEY TO LOAN H Any amount.
