THE OB ANGEBUKG- NEWS THAD. C. ANDREWS, Editor. GEORGE BOLlVFIt, Financial ind Dusixbbs Max,m;i:h. Official Paper of the Stale and of Orangeburg County. VORTUE ORANGER URO NEWS HAS A LARGER CIRCULATION TITAN ANT OTHER PAPER IN THE CO UN TT.-m SATUHDAI JAN. 16, 1875. Tlie Fatal Blow to Orangeburg. Ih consequence of the severe blow with which the Ooanokbuiio News met, by the ravages of tho recent firo it was impossible for us to give, through theEe columns, that expression of sympathy to tho sufferers, and that word pf cheerful hope for tho futuro which .. we ore enabled to promulgate to day. We have henrd many kind things and many unkind things Faid since the fire. But be it understood uow nnd forever, that the News feels as it ever has to "wards its patrons and friends, namely yiioitt rfi a jrjtr, ninctre desire te sec every one get ''?long well. We do not believe in that sordid selfishness which would prompt ono to live for himself alone We applaud the impulse which prompts one . human creature to have a daily care for his neighbor's welfare. It is true that :tlie Eocial, political and religious dis tensions in Ori.ngcburg, have been very rrcn incut. They may continue so to the ctd of time. 1 hat has nothing to do with the fact that we arc nil one coir;n cn Irotherhcod of people, and that in the emergency of a great and cettiuetive fire, rhculd lend our help to our fellow men. To-day two weeks ngo, Ornngcburg -WJUf -w*- - ihrifittg d-ffW- pncW^nR?cto- txitrii: Our norchauts were sound, nnd hopeful of the future. Qhe husband who, two weeks rgo, felt sticng in his power to continuo in[the woik of making his home happy for his wife and little ones, to-day feels t. weakness of the heart which he never drssmit of before; the wife and little ones :' who locked up to para as their lord ?nd protector, now have hearts filled ...with Eorrcw for his troubles. Alas! they feel son.dimes that he has too much to bear up under. The many happy homes on tho busi ness portion of RufscI street are gone And many hearts that were glad on New Year's Day, are now bowed low iu EadnotD. Alas 1 in one instance, the cold and icy drapery of death shrouds the form of Dr. Oliveros. We have alreudy given the facts as to each one's loss,?it is, therefore, not neceesnry to publish them again. Let us hope at the beginning of this year, 1876, that, although burnt out, each nan will summons his best energies to bis assistance and go to work manfully in helping to raise Oraugeburg again. There is still a future before us, and let us cultivate it properly. This paper will do all it can to aid in building up tho Town again. No Fight There. ir-rl) 'U\- _ That miserable paper, tho Ncivs und t'ourur, the chief cur of which, K. 11. fienbrock whipped in his own yard, and whoto cyt'b ho shoved full of sand; the lame creature which Myron Fox, editor of tie eld Charleston Republican, onco ii ode c5c iIii.to between tho thrilling ^cheitudes of a boot and a cowhide; the some big-footed devil that Alfred Ilhctt made Let behind the church vl.cn ho (lain cd lie notable satisfaction of him; the tame incarnate fiend that wrote to ono of its' Columbia correspond' ants to "go for the Republican Printibg Company" unless they carao down; the same scoundrel who is Ben's Wood's tool, and tho same immoral scapegoat which once commanded a colored company in Bermuda) yes-?that Fame man has a name, his Bins to answer for, his pangs of conscience and his crimes to nttonc. That pusillanimous and pouehc1 moulhcd editor of tho Charleston News and Courier, bitterly opposes tho propo ntion made that the Legislature should pass an Act remitting the taxes of* those who suffered by the recent firo in this place. We could not have expected more nor less from men who have no sympathy with the people of South Caroliua. Daws on, like a bird of prey, only came here to m; ke money, and docs net care the snap of your finger whether native South Carolinians arc reduced to poverty or not. so long as he can get bis printing bills paid. lie has not the instincts or feelings of ou people, ar.d therefore his rash opposi tion to relieving our citizens from the prepent taxes. \\ e do not believe the Legislature, however, will listen at him for a Uiomeut. Many of our best people arc real needy, and is it the desire of the Nines and Courier to have them made worse ofT? The Union-Heraldin strango contrast to the "dou't care-a damn-for-principle journal," comes out boldly on the side of our suffering cit izens. That paper says "remit the taxes." So say we._ The Legislature. 'J lie Legislature n:cl on the 12th insi and commenced businoss in real nice &tylc. The Hon. S. L.
