j icoim. BY JAMES U. CLARK. Leono, the hour draws nigh, The hour .we've waited bo loug, FW tuo'atagel to opeu a dbor through the That my spirit may break from its prison . ahd try Its voice in an infinite song. Just now as the slumlTcrs of night Cnrrio o'er mo with peace giving breath, 4:TJie curtains half lifted, revealed to ray sight Those windows which look on tho kingdom . ? 'flight. That borders the river of death. And a -vision fell solemn aud sweet, Bringing gleams of the morning lit-land ; I saw the white shore which the pale wa ters boat, And I heard tho low lull as thej broko at their foot Who walked on the beautiful strand. t?41v'tU! ? ? And I wondered why spirits should cling To their clay with a struggle and sigh, When life's purple autumn is bettor than spring, And the soul flies away like a sparrow, t o sing ' In a climate where leaves never die. Loona, come oloso. to ray bed. And lay your dear band on ray brow. Tho same touch that thrilled mc in dnys that arc fled. And raiso the lost roses of youth from the * dead, Can brighten the brief moments now, We havo loved from the cold world apart. And your trust wns too generous and true For them to o'crthrow; when the slanderer's < dart. Was runkling deep in raj' desolato heart, pi was dearer than ever to you. I thank the Groat Father for this, That'our love is not. lavished in vain; Each germ in the future, will blossom to , bliss And'theforms that wo love, and the lips that wo kiss, Never Bhrink at the shadow of pain. By thbiigbt of this faith am I taught, -v- That death is but art ion begun; In tho strength of this hope have I struggled and fought, With the legions of wrong, till my armor has caught The glcnm of Eternity's sun. 1.ronii, look forth and behold From headland, from hillside, and deep, The day king surrenders his banners of [> gold: The twilight advances through woodland and wold And the dews arc beginning to weep. The Moon's silver hail lie.? uncurled, Down the broad brestod mountains away; Ere sunset's red glories again shnll be furled On tho walls of the west, o'er the ploins of the world, I shall rise in a limitless day. 0! come not in tears to my tomb, Nor plant with frail flowers the sod? There is rest among roses loo sweet for its gloom. And lifo where the 1 iHi cs eternally bloom In the balm-breathing gardens of God. Yet deeply those memories burn Which bind me to you and to earth And I sometimes-have thought that ray be ing would yearn In the bowers of its beautiful home, to . return And visit the home of its birth. " ' 'Twould even be pleasant to slay, 4 And >valk by your side ts tho last; But tho land breeze of Heaven isbegining to play? Life's shadows arc mooting 'Eternity'g day, ? And its tumult ib hushed in tho past. Lcona' good-bye; should Ihe grief That is gathering now, ever bo Too dark for your faith, you will long for rolief, And remember, the journey though lone some ib brief, Over lowland and river to me. ??? i Song of tho Taxpayers on tho ttank of tho State. Three children sliding on the ice Upon a summer's day, It bo fell out, they fell in The rest they ran away. Now had these childtcn been at home, Or sliding on dry ground, Ten thousand pounds to one penny, They had not alltbcen drowned. Let them bo decently buircd ! But what wo say to the other little boys who ran away, Whalcy, Wograth, Butler; O'Connor, Locke, and ltiohards: While tumbling down tho turbid stream Lord love us how wo apples do swim.' Lib ?ol Hi.-1 7 1 , ? Machine Purity.?An ingenious Yankee, according to a Boston journal, has invented a machine which, if all is true that the inventor olaims, will do more to purify elections, restore the public tone, bring the couutry back to tho leachings of Washiugtou and tho fathers and prevent corruption than the solutions of a dozon political conven tions and the efforts of two thirds of tho party press combined. This machine is called'the patent safety ballot box,' and the inventor assures us that it cau neither bo etuffod nor manipulated. It seems to havo made bo deep an impres sion upon the Senato that wo wonder an appropriation was not made to send into South Carolina. The State stands in f wore need of the virtues possossed by this machine than any other. We should like to seo it tried on Mosos and ; :*4he South Carolina Legislature?New Xwk Herald.
