Tho Old Couple. It stands in a sunny meadow, Tho houso bo mossy and brown, With its cumbrouB old stone chimney, And the gray roof sloping down. Tho trees fold their green arms round it, Tho trcos, a ecnturj old' And the winds go chanting through them, And the sunbeams drop their gold. The cowslips spring in tho marches. And the roses bloom on the hill; And besido the brook in tnc pastures The hcrdB go feeding ut will. The children lu.ve gone and left them ; They sit in the sun nlone; And tho old wife's cars aro failing. As she harkB to tho well known tone, That won henrt in her girlhood, That soothed her in many a care, And praises hor now for the brightness Her old face used to wear. She thinks again of hor bridal? How, dressed in her robe of white, She stood by her gay young lover In the morning's rosy light. Oh, the morning is rosy as ever, But tho rose from her check has fled; And the sunshine still is golden, But it falls on a silvered head. And the girlhood dreams onco vanished Come back in her winter time, Till her fecblo pulses tremble With the thrill of spring timc's-primc. 'And looking forth from the window, She thinks how tho trees hnvo grown Since clad in her bridnl whiteness, She crossed the old door stone. -Though dimmed her eye's bright azure, fc??-vAnd dimmed her hair's young gold, The love of her girlhood plighted Has never grown dim nor old. They s?t in peace in the sunshine, Till the day was almost done: And then, at its close, an angel Stole over the threshold stone He folded their hands together? He touched their eyelids with balm; And their last breath floated upward Like the close of a solemn psalm. Like bridnl pair they traversed The unseen mystic road That leads to tho beautiful city "Whoseibuildcr and maker is God." Perhaps in that miracle country ^ . {They will give her lost youth baqk; And flowers of a vanished spring time AVill bloom iu the spirit's track. One draught fram the living waters Shall cull back his manhood's prime; And eternal years shall measure To love that outlived time. But tho shapes that they left behind them, The wrinkles nnd silver hair, Made holy to us by the kisses Tho uugcl had printed there. We will hido away 'nealh the willows, When tho day in low in the west: Where tho sunbeams cannot find them, Kor the winds disturb their rest. And we'll suffer no tell-tale tombstone, With it, ago and date, to rise O'er the two who wero old no longer, In the Father's House in tho skies. Items. A melon aud a woman arc hard to choose.
