Oa Wednesday night about 10:30
o'clock, Mr. W. K. Crook, oi tho firm of
Moseley & Crook, was returning to his
apartment in rear of the store, and as
he ooared tho Fireruco's Hull, he heard
some one call to him. Mr. Crook con
tinued to advance, and when in the
narrow defile between the Firemen's
Building and his jtore, he discerned a
figure in the darkness and rain. Tho
next instant a flash blazod in his face,
and his hat was lifted from his head.
The unknown ruffian instantly fled.
Mr Crook recovered his hit, sod on
going to a light, found that it was
p i foratcd by a ball. He was fired at,
evidently with a full intention, aud
d ubtlcss with complete conviction on
the part of his assailant that he should
be and had been killed The case is
one of most serious concern to every

There is a man about thirty-five years
old bow living within fifty miles of Con
way, N. H., who was born an invalid,
nnd could neither walk nor talk until
nearly ten years of age, uul appeared
idiotic. When some tea years of age,
ho began to walk on his toes, which he
