Owing to tho illness of our editor an i
his family we aro obliged to cut short our
usual feupply of editorial and local mat
ter.
Crimination and recrimination is the
ordor of tho day now. Go it, boys, who
cares for a- T
EiToris ftjQ being made to break up
the.Republican party. Shall it be done,
and that by ONE mau ?
Republicans, an important fight is
before ,you. The Regular Republican
Convention has met and finished its
work': The ticket?tho regular ticket?
will be presented to you on tho 16th.
Take . it, road it, aud seo that it goes in
to the .ballot*box out of your baud.
The Bolters claim that they aro the
true representatives of the people of this
State, nnd. do not mean to play second
fiddle to any ono. For tho consolation
of the exceedingly few ofthat ilk who
arjo, jn(this County, we express it as our
decided opinion, that they arc as far
from being representative men its the
skunk-cabbage is from being a roso.
Colored uiou of Oraageburg County,
you who lmvo been si jY.tbf?l in the
past, will you allow tho disappointed
ambition of a few men to despoil and
ruin . the. fair name of yo?r party?
Money, money, is being used ! J^mksa
fics are being sent throughout otic en
tiro County to dir--atide you from voting
for the nominees of your party. When
th?f come to you, bid them depart, for
their presence meat's eternal destruction
to you.
Once break up the organization of
your party, imd you may bid all future
hopes good by. Stapd up like men,
and defy the traitorj who arp trying to
ruin yon!
The Bolters crept about as sajtty as a
cat during tho past week. Men watched
tho ominous aspect of tho cx-reprcseuta
tive Byas' faco with a great deal of
anxiety, as ho wandered to and from this
or that place; but nothing could he
gleaned from n study of his Bolt&hip's
physiognomy, except that he had secrets
in his mind which he deemed it impor
tant to couccal. lie had sevoral con
ferences, Lut what pnssod is veiled in a
mystery equul to that which overclouded
the secrets ol the Geneva Tribunal.
"Tho ' T' mc Republicans," theapostleS
of ref'THi, commit the management of
the campaign to an individual who is
charged with every er:nie in the cata
Ipguo, and bad no other claims than his
supposed control of the dense colored
population of tho parishes and islands
I in the county of Charleston. This was
almost enough ; and the recent action of
tho Holters Bowcn County Convention
has tilled tho cup of shame to the brim.
******
And, after all, why should tho Con
servutivo voter bo surprised or din
appointed 1 No better thing could bare
been expected from the Orrs, the Cor.
bins, the Howens, the Whippers and the
Chirks, who aro the leading reformers.
The moyemont was born in sin, and
conceived in corruption.'1?Charleston

Let tho white people of this County
read and ponder the above from their
trusted and leading organ. If they
can swallow tho Holters, wc say, Cod
help them !
The Hon. Benjamin Byas has put
forth hi? ticket to the people of th s
CoUbty, asking for it their support.
His County platform, and tho modus
oppcrandi by which he expects to raise
himself (without grease) into the Sen
ate Chamber, are said to be wonderful
measures, and arc indicative of sure rue
cess (over tho left.) It is said his plat
form only required two hours' labor, at
the expiration of which space, it stood
forth "a thing of beauty." It has not
been given to the public yot, but is do- ,
fined to mean : the individualism of pre
liminary and precipitous prognostication,
a* oliuiiuutad jn irrefragabihty of never
flinching ana iicu'r iir-i);.!J ... ;???,
diecombubcraticn of spontaneous com
bustion, whether or not, and evincing
antediluvian indivisibilities, contcmpo
r. ueously elucidated by unregenerating
consanguinity when sycoelcphautieal and
scintillating approximately to scientific
elaboration. The platform was Written
with an eyi single to clearness and pots
picuity.

How many men were in the party
that promulgated [iho Bolters' ticket?
Were there three, four, five, or ten ?
Granting that they had the latter num
ber, what right had tuch a Sweetheart
Fry to put forth a ticket, and dare soy
they did it by authority? Wc imagine
they bad a nice time of it, closeted, as
they were, to themselves, In their glee
we presume all artificial distinctions
were buried for the time, and that now
ami then one would nudgo the other
with the explanation, "How wc apples
do swim !" Their conduct reminds us
of the elaborate petition presented to
George III, which began, "Wo the peo
ple of Great Britain," while said peti
tion was actually Written and signed by
three 'tailors of Tooley Street. A few
soreheads get together, nominate them
Selves, flaunt thcir'ticket to the bre zc,
and demand its support from the people,
when the majority of them have already
said whom they will have. Republicans,
there is bu'., one ticket in the field that
ycu must touch, and that will bear the
names of your trusted friends upon its
face. All others aro frauds. Remem
ber that etornal vigilance is the price of
liberty ! Then, keep a keeu look out!
When the Cnnndiun Iudinus wcro
once solicited to emigrate. "What!"
they replied, ' shall we say to the bones
ot our fathers, mice, end go with us
into a foreign laud?"
Tho Hon. Reuj. Byas would have no
reason to say this if a more profitable
occupation should invite him to {migrate
in the future from this County. Ho is
not fastened to this particular
spot of earth by any of those
finely wrought threads which habit aud
asscciation fijrm. Ho ootilch 1'oare to
morrow if hp wished, without, breathing
a single adieu, nnd no relative hero
would accuse him of neglect. Not so
with the nominee for Sonator on tho
regular picket. All of his ansociotions
from boyhood biud hiui to this Couuty ;
ho hos novcr bcou outside of tho State
and declares he never wishes to cross
her borders; what money ho makes will
be expended in our Couuty; if ho
should ever he told to emigrate, like the
Canadian ludiaus, his oxclauation wi'l
ho1 "What ! shall I say to tho bones ol*
my fathers, arise, and go with me into a

We do not see how tho white citizens
of our County can hesitate to make a
choice between ?yas and Jamison.

Mr.-, Dear Sir : I writo these
lines to inform you that I have be n to

informed me that Mr. II. Uiggs lollowed
him on his way home Sunday mi ruing
from Orangeburg until be caught him,
and asked him to let him put bis nan o
on Iiis Bolters' ticket, which he utterly
reluscd, and told him plainly not to do
so. After he found that Mr. Brown
took no part with him. ho told him to
tell me to come to Oraugeburg on Mon
day to say whether I would let- him
put my name on on bis ticket or uot.
But I dou't yield support to any such
Bolt as that. Ho may put my nun*, on
his ticket without my authority, and I
therefore request that if you should

to tell them that I am no bolting Repub

STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA,
ORANpEBURO COUNTY,
In the General Sessions.
0..i..hp.r Term 1872. . >
To the Honorable Robert F. Graham
Judtjc. of First Circuit:
The grand jury now iu attendance
upon this Court respectfully submit the
follow ing report:
In discha gi of our duty wo have v'si
ted the several public offices, and Bud
the sheriff's office in good order. The
office of the Clcik of Court is. as lure
toforc leportcd, in perfect order. I ho
office of Judge of Probute was closed
up and ffc were unable to examine it-,
condition.
In tho Treasurer's office wj found a
clerk who iu for mod us that the Tiva-u
rer was pnb-tbly ? it his farm. This
clerk did not. seem at all familiar with
the office. Ho was unable to answer our
interrogatories as to receipts, expeudi
lures and cash oil baud at all satisf.cto
rilly. *
' Tho School Commissioner's office wo
found badly kept und the books in dis
order and exhibiting frequent mistakes.
We have already reported this office in
competent, but tbero seems to be no
remedy, but u new election, which being
near at haud, wo hope will result in
filling this important ollioo with a per
son fitted to discharge its duties.
In tho County Commissioners office
we found nntbing wrong except the
Poor House Accounts we find that the
expenses of the establishment for a little
over five months amounted to nearly
five hundred dollars, and there being
upon an average but ei^ht persons iu
the Poor House during this time, we
consider this expense enormous. Wo
find, by examining the accounts of this
institution, that a very high charge is
made upon each article furnished, aod
is allowed by the Hoard. This was ex
plained to us by the Clerk of the Hoard
who seemed to have charge of the Poor
House in this way. He siys that he is
obliged to allow these high prices bo
cause the accounts are paid iu County
Orders which have to be sold at a dis
count. Wo present this course of the
Hoard of County Commissioners to the
Court as highlv reprohonslblo and a^
official misconduct fbr which wo pro
sent them fbr indictment. The Poor
Ilouso itself exhibits no signs of this
lavish cxpoudituro of tho people's money.
Wo find there three lunatic persons, who
?xe think should bo sont to un Asylum
for tho Insane.
We visited the offices of tho two
Trial Justioes, at the Court Housa and
find the docket book of J. Felder
Meyers vory irregulurly and badly kept.
Wo have also, examiucd the office aud
books of Trill Justice A. F. Browning
aud fiud thorn kept in business like and
proper man net-. 1 ndeed wo wero pre
pared to find this to be the orse from the
com inundations und praises we had
heard of this office during our attend
ance at Court und from our enquires in
to these matters.
We most heartily recommend Mr.
Browning as a competent and faithful
loffieer; one who thoroughly understand
tho duties of his office, aud promptly
aud efficiently discharges thetu.v
We iucorporuto aud uiake part ot this
our report tho affidavit of D A. Porter
which explains itself, and leave .the
uiatter in the hauds of your 11 ono: tu
be investigated by such order und pro
ceedings as you iuay deem best.
We have visited the Jail and tind it
in good condition. We notice that the
Jail Keeper has an assistant who i>
fully competent to preform tint duties of
his position.
Ami now ut this the cl?b of our
year's duties us Grand Jurfrs of tlii
Oounty, and in this the last report to be
submitted by us to this Court! we return
our thanks to your Honor f|r th e cour
teous assistance which yuif have ex
tended to us iu tho perfortu/uoe ut mti
duties.
We present o\r course t?pour fellow
citizens for their approv;ilj$jr censure.
Uur aim has been to 'li.-ohiU'gi our sol
emn obligations to them vri^to'it teur or
favor, but with an uyosiughFtn the pub*
lie weal. We have i-ndtSYorcd to hold
up wrong doing uiimug our county oh
ciuls for blame uud puuishYneut, and wu
havo commcuded those who have de
served our '"welldone."
We lay aside duties, the perform aw
of which has been at times onerous .m l
unpleasatit, with cou.-eieutious feeling

iu the future there will SO less public
oflieial misconduct, aud consequently ler-r
