KNOWLTON, EDITftll. GEORGE BOJLIYER, 1'IN AN (MAI. AND BUSINESS M A * A(.i K R . Ofllclal Paper of the State and or Orangcburg County. SATURDAY, APRIL 20,1872. For President: Ulysses S. Grant. Liberal Democracy. If Cicero's judgment of human na ture was not at fault when he said, in eflect, that no man becomes a knave in a moment, we iuicr that the converse of the proposition must ho equally true nnd that (save by the grace of God.) no rann is converted iustantaticously into a mod el of virtue. Applying this rule of ethics to political matters, wc have grave doubts of the sincerity of must, if not all, of the really very sensible und con torvntive articles which have re cently appeared iu several of the leading Dcmociatio newspapers. And our diffi culty is increased by our uou belief iu special Providences, and, in theso Inter days, in divine interposition in nny ense whatever. Wc concede willingly that no fitter subjects could be found for a liberal exorcise of tho gratia /Ai'tVm those Democratic papers whose utter ances seem heartfelt aud honest only when they declare the "rope and the rifle" tho best means of silencing politi cal opponents, or when they ridicule the Courts and the law which arc now meting out but a small pirt ot their full d'serts to toons of midnight ma rauders and assassins; aud for their sakes and for tho eakc of humanity at largo wo wiah earnestly for their prompt, sincere and thorough on version to a political creed whioh approximates more closely to a complete recognition of tho Master's commauds than any other yet devised of men. If these pa pers wore really sincere iu all they uow say it would certainly he ono great step toward that consummation R?f which all good meu to devoutly hope. But our memory reverts, not at all fondly, to the fact that just two years ago, these same Democratic papers made similar conser vative and liberal professions in precise* ly tho same plausible style as at present, and that a few months afterward thoy resumed, with au appetite and a koon relish enhauood by temporary abstinenoe, their bitter and venomous attacks upon every thing that savored of Republican ism. .And until n? n?Vc iyiss 0_ ? j that they have experienced an sctual and thorough ohaogo of haart wo shall believe, and shall act upou the belie!', that their present convention to virtuo will as before, bo followed by a fatal relapse into vice. Suoh a guaranty they have in their power to give. That guaranty con-.iota in their open adoption of the name of Republican, and their cordial advocacy of Republi can principles, as such. If they are unwilling to give thib pledge of their faith, tho logical oouolo tion follows that if, as they say, the State iE going to the devil, aud if. as they claim, they have tho ability and only uccd tho oppnortunity, trrpravent that catastrophe, why then plainly; they do, os a simple matter of fact prefer that the State rkould go to the devil rather fw%m ir**\ ??-?'? "? 1' * ' '?? tbau that thoy should give the guaranty iu question. For the political history t of tfcrro State during the last few year6 has shown conclusively that the door of Republicanism is open to all ?that to all who knock. Republicanism ir.s, cater I I f~*d<l toat u?l^who will, it says, come 1 Jf they .fail jpf tho opportunity, it it because they do uot really desire it?and snob halting partiotism can find no favor with Republicans, who are most truly such theu thoy are most truly patriotic. --??????????? A Louisville paper states that a lady member of a Presbyterian Church Soci ety in that city has bceu summoned for trial before the church scssson, uuder an old Mosaic code, for avowing.a bcliet in Spiritualism. The violated couimrn monts alleged are the third, fourth and seventh, Verses of the twentieth chapter of Exodus, The lady was cited to ap pear on tho;first of April, and replied that she would be ready for trial if she could have the privilege of bringing her own attorney, otherwise she would regard it os a sham affuir. ?
