The Columbia Phoenix has been en larged, aad oontaius a deal mofo news, editorial and otherwise, than it did while subject to its chronic relapses. Col. J. P. Thomas has assumed entire control of the editorial columns of the Phoenix, and we predict for that journal a career moro brilliant than could have been its boast since its rise from the Shermanic ashes of Columbia. The State Debt, The Columbia Union a? Yestorday pub lishes an exhibit of tho State debt, certi fied toby Judge Jus. L. Orr, J. D. Pope, Esq., J. G. Brcnizer, Esq., Cashier of the Central National Rank, aud J. M. Baxter, Esq., of Newberry, showing the 'entire indebtedness of tho State to be only $12,013,908.08. What will the Courier and the unsta ble Neics preach now F Will they ques tion the voracity of Messrs. Orr, Pope, Brenizer and Baxter ? We await to sec. Wanted. To find tho constitutional provision that provides for tho issuing of an in junction by the courts agaiust the Leg islature, restraining that body from on ?Cting certain laws. A daily', published at one cf the loading oitios of the State, suggests such a remedy against our financial troubles. The Columbia Union. ? tjti ? ? This estoonied contemporary came to us a few days ago with a new and beau tiful heading.' Established only a year ago, the Union has attained that nicht in tho temple of fame of honorable aud energetic journalisMi, for which many have labored a decado iu vain. The Union is Bopublican in politics, but its columns, like those of our own journal, have never been used as a medium through which our people could be mis represented. Although vilely assaulted on all sides by its intolerant contempor aries, it has never shirked what its editor conceived to bu his duty to pro gress, to the cause id* liberty, ami to God. Its editor, Mr. L. C. Carpenter, we know nerannellw ??.? -. ever conduct his journal in the fu ture as in the pasi?on the side of eter nal justice to all men. We wish our contemporary abundant success. Tue Bright Side View. The National Administration, with few exceptions, seems to us to bo doing very well just now. Socretary Uout wcll's last monthly statement shows n decroase in the public debt of nearly nine million* during October. When wc consider that eighty millions of dol lars have been stricken oil' from the annual taxation and that business is not particularly flourishing at present, this exhibit cannot but bo regarded as a con clusive proof of the honesty and judi cious economy with which the national finances aro managed. The prompti tude too, with which alleged defaulters are overhauled, no mat er what may have been their standing in the Bcpub- i lioau party, teaches the samo thing. At the satno time tho power of the govern ment is being especially directed to other ends besides this of successful financiering. The application of a just legal prossuro to tho obliquities of Mor mondom, too long overlooked which promises to annibilato that nuisance root nud branch, and tho inauguration of an equitable, humane Indian policy, arc among the things now engaging the active attcution of President Graut and his official coadjutors. Tho question is whether our Southern pcopio, as we go along, have not somo thing to say in regard to theso efforts of the administration to faithfully wield its power in behalf peace and law, and in tho security of a common lore and pros perity throughout the nation? We can greatly encourago and strengthen every effort that looks forward to a better state of things, or wo can set them back. It must be remembered that every victory aroascs nnd stimulates those who are battling for the full return of concord and prosperity in the land. Every kind word, from the South is a stimulus for good to our public servants, and a lift in the direction of right measures. Mr. Boutwell ana the Chairman of the Son ate Finance Committee luvo shown n willingness to take off at luast thirty millions from the present taxation. It is statca* also that tho President is con templating the recommendation to Con gress of a plan for gathering tho labor statistics of tho whole nalion, suggested probably, by the present unsettled condi tion of that branch of our affairs at the South. Wo believe that it is an excel lent idea, ..nd if so, deserves and should receive the popular encouragement. It is easy enough to say that, with re spect to all theso matters, the adminis tration ought to attend to its duties without tho least regard to the demon strations of the people. It might de termine to do so. especially as "Mr. Grant," according to his wife's account, "is a very obstinate man;" but every one knows the difference of going with aud struggling against the tidc# Be sides, the President in proclaiming in advance, that ho should have no policy to enforce contrary to tho'will of tho people, made therein a special appeal to. have that will made known to him. However true it may bo with other States, let South Carolina take pride in testifying her endorsement of till the good features of the administration, and her desire to tee it become better iu the future. There arc many things connected with the administration that we would have had otherwise bad it been in our power. Hut we cannot always have af fairs to turn upon our own wishes or inclinations. ^To are. ever opposod to that power whiuh allows tho suspension of tho writ of habeas corpus in times of peaoe. We believe it is contrary to the spirit of our institutions; but, still, we are disposed to beat down all ovil ten dencies in th. national administration by appealing to tho good people of our section to cease the bitter opposition which has characterized their feelings and actions iu reference to General Grant. We shall hope for bettor times, while wc still appeal to our loved South ein brothers, to cease their opposition and acquiosce in that which they are powerless to recall. HYMENEAL.
