tried him aud found it just as he said.
If a friend wants our umbrella hereafter,
be will find our name printed on the in

-We said in lasf week's "Orange
Peelings'' that "wo undorstood there
would bo a Religious Concert given at
tho Presbyterian Church bttfore long."
To our use of tho word "religious" as an
adjective in this connection, wo under
stand objections have beon thick and fast,
tho would-be critics spying that Stored
ought to havo been tho word. Now wo
have no disposition to quarrel, as wo do
not write for the Ornngcburg Newb to
please the few. But wheu such ridicu
lous objections as tho ono noted are
urged against our writings, wo cannot
forbear giving them a passing notice,
and to show of nil the
Shameless editors We have, yet tis true,
Tliere are as bud abandoned critics too.
Now we said "Religious. Concert" add
wc meant just what we said : and we
will venture to assert that every person
possessed with three grains of common
"mother wit" will say that wo were cor
rect. Now "sacred" might havo been
sweeter to euphony with tho few, but
that would not have made it any inure
correct than the term "religims."
But wo will let Webster settle the
matter. He says religious means any
thing "concerned with religion} teaching
or setting forth religion ; art apart to re
ligion ; an a religious society ; a religious
sect; a religious place; religious tears,
etc. Sacred ho . difinca "as not profane
or common ; as, a sacred place ; a sacred
dag ; sacred service, etc.
If this doesn't show that the two
terms arc synonymons, th.cn wc don't
know what synonyms arc. If it is
correct, to say a religious society, a re
ligious nhice, religious wars, &c., it is
equall}' correct to say a Religious Con
ceit, the only difference of tho two wordn
depending altogether upon euphony
On tho other hand, it is equally correct
to say ?Sai led Concert ; but how iu the
tiamo of common sense it cm be incor
rect to speak of n Concert as a Religious
one, w-j fail to understand, espeeialy
when it is gotten up fur a Religious pur
pose.
But let us slop with this petty .stuff.
We ought not to notice such, but some
bow or other we luve d ?po so. Wc re
collect having seen once itt school a
boy's copy bull; in which the well
known ridago, "Kvil communications
corrupt good manners'' was written by
hi.s teacher. Wc looked down the pngs
at the boy's writing, and discovered that
he had spelled communication ever}' time
with a k instead of a c. Wc nskt-1 him
"why he did not follow the copy?" lie
replied "if my teacher spells wrong, that
is t?r? reason why I should." Wc left the
.Couth to bis delectable conceit.

A Vine-Land Memory.
Oh! tender hearts of days gone by.
Oh ! Living souls that round me ttriuc,
Mow warn about my heart ye lie,
As i ride home beneath the pines '
Tho waning moon is thin and far,
How far she seems, yet h.. - divine !
And here and thero comes fosth a Slav,
As 1 ride home beneath the pines.
i shout with joy as on i ride,
Swiftly, nor heeding path nor sign,
M.. L-. ... \. . ?...(. r..:-.. i_i
As 1 ride home beneath the pines.
i shout with joy?and then the tears
Course down my ehoek, a star-lit line;
My heart goes yearning back thtough years.
As n i ride beneath the pines.
Hark! there is Pluto's friendly bay?
Sec! thero tho home-lights, greeting,

The wife awaits, the children play,
And i ride notnc beneath the pines!

The press is an nchicvomout of a vigor

itself for simplicity, durability, economy
and power. A lever worked by two

which coil two other, ropes'a round its
axle in opposite directions, aud contract
together two levers, which force Ihe ft 1*

of the Bolin Press ob built for ordinary
packing is 576,000 pounds, and is ro
