mm\ -t Information has reached us of an other terrible tragedy in Union Couo ty. Kight prisoners were taken from the jail and brutally murdered on Sun day night last, by a mob of disguised men. A "speciul" to the Charleston Daily News thus gives tho particulars of the frightful havoc made of human life by these fiends incarnate "Tho facts of tho wholesale ruob-mur ders in Union County seem to bo about as follow;; A number of mounted men ?supposed to be about five hundred? appeared at Union Courthouse ubout 12 o'clock Sunday night, and proceeded to the jail. They demanded the keys from Jailor Hughes and Deputy Sheriff Hill, who refused to surrender* thorn. Mrs. Hughes wus then catechised as to tho whereabouts of the keys, but, being greatly alarmed, did not answer?merely pointing to a bureau, where they wore deposited. The drawers wcro immedi ately opened, ;ho keys obtained, tho jail doors opeu?d, and ten colored prisoners . (under indictment for the Stevens mur der) were carried to tho hanging grouod ?about a mile and a half from tho town?when six of tho party were shot, two hung, and two "turned up missing." The jailor and deputy sheriff were car " ricd off from the jail about a mile, and tied in front of tho sheriff's residence. After the jailor had been bound, a letter -_r..it- .-. ;??-.._.1_j :_ v;- . i . et, signed K. K K., and contained these words: 'Whtreus, it is douhtcd that Thomas intended removing the prisoners from a place of, fair trial, tho people Were compelled to administer justico themselves.' 'Lot not thy right hand know what thy left hand doeth 1' 'Mo loch will have his victims even if Mich aol of justice mint have his martyrs !' " Tho 1'tc.lcgrum" further states that, "there is no eluo to the perpetraton." Will not this bo Hufficicnt to move Gov ernor Scott from a passivo irresolution in regard to tho up count/y troubles, to action t \Ye ask : Ts human life te bo thus frittered away, when the arm of tho law i is strong enough to protect it? Are Wicked atffl hellish scenes like thcao to bo enacted upon the soil of our State much longer ? Will Governor Scott re niaia inert and inactive in this matter ? Docs he place so little an estimate upon human lifo and upon human souls, as to reeeivo Jntcliigcnco of those outrages, Without at once resolving to put a ?top South Carolina will bo declared a nest of assassins, and *thc very atmosphere thronged with Ku-Kluxes; when the fact of it is, tho whole thing is confined to the vicinity of TJuion Court House, and the outrages committed perhaps by men who are not citizens of our State. Gods! shall it bo said that South Caroliua is unable to protect hcrselffrom the outlawry of a few strolling frccboot ers of Uniou County, and bordering States. We say no. Let Governor Scott call upon the Law-abiding citizens, and it will not be suid. One hundred of tho right sort of men, sent to tho up-country ri^bt now, would do more towards arresting the guilty parties, and restoring order, than seventeen thousand constables. They would even do better than Uni ted States troor^. We admit these would servo the purpose just now; but wo want a lesson taught. As soon 0e order was brought about, these troops would bo taken away, and these outlaws would feel themselves free agnin. But send a determined Dumber of white na tives up there, and it will teach these villians two lesssous. 1. That their work is not concurred in by everybody ; i I 2. That tho best men of the State are I over ready to assist in having thern ar | rested and brought to justice, and hung I if the magnitude of their crimes demand I 1 No, wo say let us try and take care of our own State. Let's uot give the North ! any more cause to believe that we arc all cut-throats. t Tbc adoption of the course, or one similar to the one indicted in this arti cle, will, in our opinion, bsve a most salutary ofFcct. At all events, justice demands that Gov. Scott shall take some step in re gard to these troubles, and that quickly. Action ! actUn t? ?eiien !!! is the es sential remedy, and it must be opccdily applied. Tho World Almanac for 1870 is in valuable. The statistical iuformation it contains is worth a great deal to any | man of business. TSn^lmm^f^^mi?^TiW^^Todl^n^mtuc other State! not un frequently-' Iiis deluded constituents would go for rc-in stating him, when his term was out. What a commentary upon the igno rance of many of the Republican party. How eloquent an appeal it ought to he to those who have the fpwer in their bunds of educating tho masses ! Alas! that we arc forced to say that in our opiniou there are many who laugh and chuckle over the ignorance that broods over our land ; th \t some men are wick ed enough to conspire to keep thousauda of.human Eculs in darkness, iu order that they may be the more easily duped. G?d grant that in the next campaign these evils may bo hunted down and up rooted ; and honest men, citi/.cus of South Corolinn, elected to fill the ofTieos which many hold now but to tarnish and dis grace ! When we say citizens of South Caro lina, we mean it in this sense. Wo mean nil those who shall live here at that time, and whose purpose it is to use what their office makes fur them, for the good of tho State ; who will promise to help lighten tho burden of taxation thut now oppresses our people, j This is plain. And this will bo demanded of every man who offers himself fur pos'tion in 1872. We havo conferred with gentleman high in position upon this ?ubjoot, and were assured that this point should be most strongly embodied iu the next platform of tho Republic n party. All cau aud will uritc, upon a princi ple like this, and work for tho welfare of the Stato. It must succeed, and we but echo tho drifts of determined minds, when wo write it down to-day. The man who coincs here ono year hence, just ou the eve of a cumpaign, aud puts himself before the people for an office, will not meet tho reception ho might have received iu tho past, lie will be renuestod to rn back home. And that, I too, by tho Republican party. I ~h~ ym>e n eTlT" MAnuiRn?On the 7?h init., at lh< resi dence of the brides father, by the Uev. j, f. Bulat, Mr. Thomas IE LEACH to Mis* FRANCES M. PATUICK.
