But tho whole thing is explained in the following quotation. Says-this retiring editor i "As regards my politics. I know of | nothing save Democracy, the ,old '76 stamp.".. '.'??>: , sturdy clays o{ Republicanism, to think . of them, much less to write about them. But let every man enjoy his own opinion. Woi ' hope ? that our retired brother of the? quill will meet with suc cess in whatever field his inclinations leads him. - IM| .-...Mm [communicated.] Mr. Ldit<?\: Much has been written from time.to t/imc about the benefits of education; aud as.a general thing tho details arc considered too dry aud un .interesting for admission into the coluius of the press. I am induced to think, however, from your frequent mention of Free Schools, and of the interest which I know you must feel in the organization of these schools, that you will give space to this communication. In view of the necessity which since tho war compels us to ratrench all the usual expenses of liviug, aHd to practice the most systematic ;ea/l ri^cd cconomv, the peoplo of this State should not onty . feel grateful for the opportunity of edu cating their children, but should heartily endorse that form of Government which, in oonsitlorafinn <?f tho poverty of the people, und in tho CJycrcuc of a liberul policy, Juts placed the mcaus of educa tion without cost or expense within reach of all. The heaviest item of expenditure, in all large falntl'ies, has heretofore been, the sums expendod in tho education of their children. But now the cost can be reduced to almost nothing, and without a cprespond ing diminution of the amount or quality of education, moral, religious, or inte Icctual which the children would re 'ccive. Tt seems to be a vexed question in the minds of the intelligent and influential portion of our eit izuns, whether or not Vublic Schools are preferable to tho old i-ystcur. And indeed there is a certain class, who openly oppose the present school system because they think (a? they sny) if is not vcrprcldlile to teach or r?end their children to Public Schools. Now I regard ull such objections as above ttrliw* nwrcly the 'fancies of a mind dfceased by prejudice nnd hatred, and feel sorry for their ignorance. There c mi be-no dtittbt tliat children can ro (civoflB good au ?d?dnf/ftP.i hi tho Public HcliooK intellectual, moral nnd religious as they would be likely to ?l tola tit ill > [bebt.private or boarding schools. And as a proof of this wo point with pleasure 10 the long list of names become distin guished fur their charity and bonevo for their, litorary? attainments who were taught "entirely in tho public schools. Another in-portarit argument in favor of Ohr schools^ or of our prcscut system, is that the system of education should in ull cases bo in harmony with the system of government, and especially should this be eo in the United States, and in all governments founded upon the will of tho people. Our State Government I believe to bo founded upon moral truths and nature's laws, and not upon the opinion of a.privileged class os here tofore; and it has a tendency to drive from tho minds of our people all such evils as artificial and unnatural ?distinc tions among men, while at the same time it teaches independence of spirit, aud virtue is loved for virtue's sake. Men are taught to give all the homugc which crowned heads receive in Europe, to these who deserve it, aud in all oases they arc taught to judge, act, and think for themselves, and not tu be governed iu their choice by tho opinions or preju dices of others. ^ I am delighted to see the growing in terest iu establishing free schools throughout our County, aud although, perhaps no great amount of practicable good has as yet becu accomplished, yet Jjjreat strides have been made towards re moving the '"Old man of the inountuiti" from the shoulders of thoso couucctcd with the schools, which so long has op pressed aud paralized almost all their cfTorts. Under this dead weight, this system received a false aud degrading pusitiou. And those of our citizeus who were actuated the by kindest ' of motives iu any manner aided tho Commissioners iu organizing these schools, were misunderstood aud ofteu times misrepresented. This protean '"spirit, always the epetomc of all that is meat), treacherous, and contemptible symbol of what is false in principles, of j what ii low and disgusting in persoual character, has deterred many good men from aiding and leuding their influence to this cause; for there has been a pub lic sentiment, which if not universal, had sufficient power to. drive away in telligent mop from taking or accepting positious which would enable them to be of service. These evils were^rntrd to bear by those who did accept position, but with an eliding confidence that they would be finally successful aud with a con sciousness of doing right, aud that they tvi ue property understood au? lulriy judged of in the future, they continued to v.oik, and the growing interest with which all of our citizens move in the mat ter of Public Schools hear ample testimo ny in favor of those men. Perhaps Mr. Editor Idiave uot confined myself to the subject of Free Schools, as closely as I should have done, but a desiro to point out some 1' the difficulties which huvc been thrown In the way, has led me astray. I will however at some future, time, furnish you for publication, some statistics in regard to schools in bur County, the number of Teachers, <Cc , if you think it will be interesting to any of your many readers.
