THE ORANGEBORG NEWS SATURDAY, MARCH. 12,1m MALCOLM I. BROWNING, iditor. The Prw* Conft-reace, The Columbia Guardian and ethers ?f the Stato press have suggested that all of the editors ot the State, opposed to the feur^oe^a wrrnptioa of our State government, meat together in coo fereoco at Coluaabia on alee 16th iaetL The Charleston A*k>?, irr' advocating the suggestion, aud urging upon all pa pers of tbe State to be represented at thia meeting, does not understand that the object of the meeting ia to pat forth a platform or any pnblio declaration of polier', httt bo bring the anti-radical edi tors together "so that ihey may inter change views and opinions and make themselves acquainted by, conferring to gether, with the feeliqg and; deairo of every section of the State," With this vre entirely couour, and we earnestly hope that all of our ooptempo rariee throughout the State will meet to gether in conference. Let us see what are the chances for us, in the grand ef fort of patriotism, that as .a people we are about to make. Let us hear whether the people of South Carolina are ready to unite upon a course of sction that has buried past delusions, that admits facta that are accomplished, and that has a bright My of hope for our future. Let the body of men who band- them selves together for the redemption of their State, meet, upon a platform that knows uo distinction of class, caste or color; which recognises white-man, and black man, as equally CITIZEN i Let us make one more rally, one more effort, and let us make it, upon a bar?, and by means that are practical, sensible and that have a chahco of success ! We trust that the Press of the State will meet at this Conference, and that they will agree upon a courao to be pre sented, and advocated by them to the people, which will unite all the honest citizens of South Carolina, 'white and black, in an effort to secure tho govern roent?f?ito^he hands of the honest.^peV, ' the worthyv ubite them upon thia sensi ble admission of what ia tbe reality of our situation, and which is the only effort that can be successful! Signs of Progress. The prompt action of the Houto of Representatives in the United States Congress, in summarily summoning to its bar for trial, its corrupt members apeaka bright hopes, that honesty ia not entirely trampled in the dust of oblivion. 'We hope that Whittemore'a party will promptly repudiate this its expoeed \y corrupt member. Never mind how good a Republican he may be, however far ho may go in promises and in asso ciating oheek by jowl, hob and nob, with <the colored people, let them not harbor' one whom the world knows to be totally unworthy of the association of honest men. Let the promptings of sn honest heart, be heard and lot the voters of hia congressional district repudiate him, and hoot him from their midst. Another sign of promise is the defeat of Butler's Georgia Bill, which would go toahow that crushed as is our sister State "the Poland of America," aa she has been called, there is a term to hay ."durance" and her humiliation. Tbe de feat of this bill aud the adoption of Bing ham's amendment, will discontinue the terms of office ot Bullock and the Legis lature of that State, and give the people tbe liberty aud right of a ballot in 1870. *w?w^^wswp^-^esaaawii 11*o Con him* The Ceusua returns just published show the following facts : Ln.eijjht Counties oC the 8tase> among which ii Orangeburg,, both rseea have increased, sixteen Couuties both races have doc ceased; in four Counties, tbe whites have deoreused and the blacks increased ; in. two- Counties the whites have- increased and blacks dec rested, tjbf re are Marlboro aud Sumter. Borne hints on tho "Cultivation of the Castor Bean and Bene" for oil, front the pen of Gen. JE. P. Alexan der, suggest another means of diversify ing our industry. '*Poultry Farming for. the Soath," a beautifully illustrated artu ele on the best breeds of Fowls, will be interesting and profitable to all who are fond of eggs and chickens. Articles on Sisal Hemp and the cultivation of the Banana commend themselves particular ly to Florida readers. The Editor's "Suggestive Facts" should set 6ur peo ple to -thinking. We hope rhey will heed the warning the article embodies? don't neglect everything else to plant cotton.
