Negroes at the Academy of Music. About noon on Suturday luat, says the Gfaa?'"*ton Newtt Mr. John T. Ford, the lessee of the Academy of Music. was ar rested iu tlmt buildiug duriog rehearsal, upon a warrant issued by Magistrale T. J. Mackcy. The writ was bused ou the affidavit of a negro man, stating that on the previous evening. January 7th, ho had visited the Academy under Mr. Ford's management, applied und offered money for a ticket of admission to the orchestra or dresa circle.of the building, to witi"ess the performances, and was re fused by Mr. Ford's orders, in violation of tho laws of South Carolina, made in pursuance of the aols o. Congress for bidding any distinction on account of race, or color or previous condition. The officer informed Mr. Ford that if he would proceed to Magistrate Mackey'a office, No. 29 Broad street, he (the offi cer) would follow in the rear. This sug gestion was complied with, and the sent of justice reached. Tho mngisirate was surrounded by a large orowd mf colored people, evidently wailing for the trial. Tho warrant and affidavit was read to Mr. Ford, and he at once waived an ex amination, and stated his readiness to en ter into bonds and appear before tho Court of General Sessions, and expressed bis desire to test the law speedily and thoroughly. The bonds were given by Mr. Ford personally, and Messrs. John Chadwick tnd John H.Dcvcreux, in the sum of five hundred dollais each. Another warrant was then served, upon tho affidavit of a negro named Chtusscn, declaring that ho hud presented a ticket and was refused admission by the door keeper.. The examination was waived in this case also, and like boud.s were exe cuted. The magistrate, in an explanatory way remarked that tho colored people of Charleston embraced many persons of intelligence and refinement aud charac ter, who did not desire to intrude among the whites, but insisted upon precisely the same accommodation in tho same part of the Academy. Others of the race expressed their re luctance, in discussing the ease, to asso ciate with the poorer darkies (blue! trash) who might visit tho Family Cir cle, but wished that black as well us ?white "aristocracy" should be provided for. Several really respectable colored per sons, during the day, disavowed all sympathy for a movement denounced by them as a political trick, and avowed willingness to sit i.i the places provided for their own race when they visited the Academy. It is stated that the case will bcheatd by Judge Carpenter nt an curly day in Chambers, and that no attempts to test the right of admittance will bo mudo pending the suit.
