We published *eek before last a com. inundation from an intelligent gentleman in the County, upon the above subject. The writer bases his remarks upon hia ex perience'of what is an intolerable nuisance ? ??d^grievanoe to the farmers generally. Oar correspondent suggest* as a remedy this epidemic kbptotnania, that our farmers and every good citizen watch those storekeepers through the country rwtho-buy cotton, in small quantities and at ? night, and upon obtaining a clue that will tend to convict them, to report and proeeoute them. complaint is one which is echoed bj every one who knows anything of oottou-picking this year, and the remedy suggested by our correspondent is a 3 good one The Grand Jury, at tho last Term, f Called attention to the growing evil, and hia honor Judge Carpenter spoke to the colored people present, and advised them if honest to soil their seed cotton only in the day time, and thia would then fix suspicion on the dishonest night-sellers. The Florence cor respondent of the Charleston Daily Jfewt, suggests what appears to be a simple sod practical plan for stopping ike practice. He says, "Township ordinances snd Ibe resolutions of County meetings may . oheck the universal pillaging, but they oannot bring it to an end. Nothing less than s stringent aot of the Qeneral As sembly, regulating the hours of purchas ing loose ootton, and providing for the f punishment of the buyer as well as the seller of stolen prodnoe, will have any lasting effect, and the planters, farmers, atui laborers, who know where the shoe pinohca, may properly take steps at once to secure the pesssgo of such en aot at the pext session of the Legislature The Acte* peys upon this subject, that the laborer* working on shares are aa deeply interested as their employers in prevent ing robbery end than. Two-thirds of the steabge comes out of the pocket of the employer, and one-third out of the pocket of the laborers. The hard-work ing colored mon are for this reason as anxious to prevent cotton stealing as the employer can bo. As landowners and laborers have a common interest in avoiding loss by pil lage, it is proper that the two classes should unite in a memorial to the Legis lature praying for the passage of a bill for their joint security and protection. The News also urges the preparation of a petition from each County in the State setting forth the wrong . and asking for its obvious remedy. Let all the honest men, then of our County, white and black, unite to make this eminently proper and necessary movement. It is a question in whioh political creeds have no interest; it is simply the honest men, uniting to pro tect their hard-earned profits, from the pillages of the dishonest and the lazy. Untiring iudustry uud perseverance, per haps sacrifice, sees the fruits of all its care and labor, just at the eve of its be ing reaped and enjoyod, disappear, van ish beneath the touch of the idle vaga bond and thoif. Let us unite, citizens, to take this lawful and proper way of stopping this almost unendurable wrong. Bill Packing in Chicago.?The Chicago Tribune aays tho business ot beef packing, which has hitherto been a very large and lucrative branch of trade in' that city, is declining rapidly in favor of Texas aud Colorado. In the year 1860 tho number ot cattle packed there was 34,624. This number continued to increase rapidly till 1864?5, when it amounted to 92,549. The next year it fell off to 27,172, and for the year 1868 9 was 26,950. The cause of this decad ence is owing to the fact that beef* can be supplied to the eastern markets from the south and west more cheaply that it can bo sent from Chicago. It is tsti mated that there was a loss of ruiiy 1*0" per cent on the average of all the beef sent to New York from Chicago last year, 'and packers are not likely to try the costly experiment again, on a very ex tensive scale. It is found that it costs less to send _oxnn cattle direct to the <acab?ard than to scud them to Chicago and pay tho expense of shipment from that point either on foot or in barrol.? While the killing of beef for supply near er home will, perhaps, continue, the competition of Chicago beef with Texan cattle, in tho New York market, has virtually ccancd. HEAD THIS.
