Why speak of life...
As if 'twere blU.b4
AS if a height
Within the might
Of man to climb,
And in his timo
Pluck many a toy
And many a joy !
'Tis but an upr?ad, cragg'd and torn;
For every rose there's thrice a thorn ;
At every step the ascent's made
The air grows chill and roses fade.
Why climb we th?m.
Why strain our ken,
To mount the scalp
Of a cheerless Alp ?
Why not the base
The better place
To bask the while
We breathe or smile ?
Would but we list, we'd stay below
Ahd catch some sunshine, leas the glow,
And less the storm that howls on high,
And makes Poor Life an agony.
Outrageous Barbarity in the
Florida Penitentiary.?The shock
ing occurrence related below by the
Quincy (Fla.) Commonwealth shows the
condition of things in the Florida
Penitentiary. It is hoped, for the cred
it of our sister State, that tho mat
ter will be fully investigated, and the
eruol barbarians who perpetrated this
Otttrage upon a poor negro be brought to
Oondign punishment:
Inhumanity.?A short time ago we
noticed the escape of a colored prisoner
a the Penitentiary at Chattahoochee
I bis subsequent arrest at Thomasvjllo,
fit. He was afterwards brought back
and placed in solitary confinement. Wo
uiv-j received the following account rela
tive to his treatment from very good au
thority, there being various reports con
cerning the matter in eirculatiou here.
iVc learn that when brought back the
prisoner was confined in a cell on bread
rind water for several days heavily ironed,
end in a debilitated condition taken out
and suspended by his thumbs with a
eord, ahd left in that situatiou until the
cords out the flesh to the bono.
He then begged to bo killed, to relieve
him of his sufferings. No attention
being paid to it, he, in a moment of des
peration, managed to raise his body so as
Co gtii the eord betwoon his kuees, when,
with a gigantiu effort, he broke it. Ho
discovered and ordered not to move,
reply was, "I want you to kill me.
sow if I attempt to run you will kill
me. I would rather die than live in
this torment." He arose and staggered
ifirfridf tho officers quarters with his
ball and ohain, when the sentinel snapp
ed a cap at him. Three of tho guard
4hen came up at double quick aud pierced
bis body with, bayonets. The surgeon,
ef ,A#.faiu^ntiary then visited him, and
twe&ag off remarked that he was not
bawi. The wounied man replied: "You

then ordered to be pinioned, sproad

Sad Affair ? Seduction of a
Young Girt, bt her Rrotiier-in
Law.?About twelve o'clock on Satur^
day morning last, a man, (whose name
with that of the young girl is suppressed
for obvious reasons, but whom we shall
designate as It.,) apparently about thir
ty.live years of age accompanied by a
girl not more than sixteen voats of ago,
put up at the Wavcrley House on King
street, representing themselves as man
and wife. It was remarked that the
girl appeared to 'be too young for hia
wife, but no suspicion that she was oth
erwise than was represented entered the
mind? of any who observed and com
mented upon her girlish looks.
I About uino o'clock Sunday morning
Captain Hendricks, Chief of Police, r*?
Ceived a telegram ' from Fayctteville,
North Carolina, announcing tho elope
ment of a married man with his sister
in-law, and requesting him to be on the
look out, as it was thought that the
couple had come to this place. A de
scription of the parties accompanied the
request. Captain Hendricks detailed
Officer Reed to work up the case. After
some little, but very shrewd investiga
tion, ho found the couple, and arrested
them. The girl was sent home by the
Northeastern Railroad yesterday morn
ing. The villain who had ruined her is
for the present allowed to escape the
punishment he SO richly deserves. Ho
is represented to be a handsome roan
I with a winning address. The girl is un
usually pretty.
R. some years since married tho old-'
est of three Bisters in one of tho most
respectable families in Fayottcvillo. She
diod shortly after marriage, and, after a
reasonable length of time, ho married
tho next oldest, who is still living, and
has borne several children to him.
While thus situated he corrupted the
youngest sister, and about a week ago
rau off vfith her. As soon us the elopc
ircnt was kuown there was great excite
ment iu Faycttcvillo, and tho citizens
subscribed liberally to defray the ex
penses of a party organized to pursue
the villiun aud rescue his dupe from his
cl?tohes. Tho party went to Augusta.
Atlauta and other places, but heard
uothing of the in until their arrost here
on Suuday.
Tho restoration of this erring girl to
tho arms of her parents is due altogeth
er to skillful management of Officer
Rccd, who, in this, as iu numerous other
cases which we have been called upon to
chronicle, has showed great ability.?

Heath in the Ring.?Tho Star has
already published an account of the fatal
prize fight near Cayuga Lake. Wc
gather the following ndditiounl particu
lars from tho Ovid Bee:
Tho parties had been boasting of their
prowess for a long time, each claiming
that ho could whip the other, and finally
they made an arrangement to fight at
Fnrmcrville. Constublc Connover, how
ever, notified thciu that they would be
arrested if they did so, and induced them
to shake hands and say, "quits." Tho
same evening a gambler and desperado,
"Art." Wood, of Ovid, who had put
himself forward as Donloy's backer, in
duced the parties to change their friend
ly purrpose, aud a fight was made up for
810 a side. On Saturday last the par
ties, with their seconds and others, went
to tho place designated to have it out.
A ropo was stretched, and the two
pugilists shook hands preliminary to en
tering the ring. For some reason Mc
Graw did not wait, but commenced tho
fight during the hand-shaking, and deait
his blows so powerfully that Donloy, af
ter being knocked down threo or four
times, retreated, saying thut he had had
enough. But "Art." Wood, his second,
took a revolver from his pocket and told
him he must whip McGraw, aud at the
same time informing tho bystaudcrs that
ho would Bhoot any one who interfered.
Donloy returned, seized McGraw by
tho collar, and kicked him. The kick
caused McGraw to boud over, and as he
did so, Dooley hit him on tho neck with
all tho force ho could commaud. Tho
blow burst nn artery, and McGraw died
in two minutes. When he fell, aud by
standers exclaimed that he was dead, tho
notorious "Art." swore that ho wasn't
dead and offered to back up his assertion
by a bet of $25. Directly, "Art,"
started Donlcy off on his owu horse, and
he got out of reach as soon as possible.
He wont to a ravine near Ovid, left his
horse, aud concealed himself. Wo hear
that lie was found in tho ravine on Mon
day, disabled, having fallen from a cliff.
Farmurville is notorious for bloody af
frays. Only two years ago one mau was
pounded to death there by another, and
afterward acquitted on oath on the
ground that ho did it in self de fence.
"Art." was under doublo bonds to keep
the p-"Ace at Ufa '???>.' of the lat* fb'bt
in cousequoucc of bis brutalities. Iu 1
