It is hoped, for the cred ? lA of our sister State, that tho mat ter will bo fully investigated, and the 4r?el barbarians who perpetrated this Otttenge upon a poor negro be brought to condign punishment: Inhumanity.?A short time ago we noticed tho escape of a colored prisoner Icons the Penitentiary at Chattahoochee ?lud' hi*subsequent arrest at Thomasvillo, 6*. He was afterwards brought back ?ad placed in solitary confinement. We nave received tho following account rela tive to his treatment from very good au thority, there being various reports con cerning the matter in circulation here. We loarn that when brought baok tho prisoner was confined in a coll on bread end water for several days heavily ironed, end in a debilitated condition takon out and suspended by hid thumbs with a ?MM, and' left in that situation until the cords cut the flesh to tho bone. He then begged to bo killed, to relieve him of his sufferings. No attention feeing paid to it, he, in a moment of des peratton, managed to raise hia body so as t91? the cord betwoon his knees, whon, witft a gigantic, effort, he broke it. Ho Waa discovered and ordered not to move. Jjfc atjply was, "I want you to kill mo. I know if I attempt to run you will kill no. I would rath or die than livo in this torment." He arose and staggered tgtfjardp the officers quarters with bis bell and ohain, when the soutiucl snapp ed a cap as him. It was remarked; that tbe girl appeared to *be too young for bis wife, but no suspicion tbat she was oth erwise tban was represented entered tbe minds of any who observed and com mented upon her girlish looks. About uino o'elook Sunday morning Captain Uondricks, Chiof of Police, re ceived a telegram from Fayctteville, North Carolina, announcing tbo elope ment of a married man with his sister in-law, aod requesting bim to be on the look out, as it was thought that the couple had come to this plaee. A de scription of the parties accompanied the request. Captain Hendricks detailed Officer Reed to work up the case. After some lHtlft, but very shrewd investiga tion, bo found the couple, and arrested them. The girl was sont home by the Northeastern Railroad yesterday morn ing. Tbe villain who had ruined her is for the prcsout allowed to escape the punishment be so richly deserves. Ho is represented to be a handsome man with a winuiog address. The girl is un usually pretty. R. some years since married tbe old est of three sisters in one of tbo most respectable families in Fayctteville. She died shortly after marriage, and, after a reasonable length of timo, he married the next oldest, who is still living, and has borne several children to bim. The restoration of this erring girl to the arms of her parents is due altogeth er to skillful management of Officer Reed, who, in this, as iu numerous other cases' which wc have been called upon to chronicle, has showed great ability.? Wo gather the following additional particu lars from tbo Ovid Bee: Tho parties had been boasting of their prowess for a long time, each claiming that he could whip the other, and finally they made an arrangement to fight at Farmerville. Constable Connover, how ever, notified them that they would be arrestod if they did so, and induced them to shake bands and say, "quits." Tho same evening a gambler and desperado, "Art." Wood, of Ovid, who had put himself forward as Donlcy's backer, in duced the parties to change their friend ly purrpose, aud a fight was made up for 810 a side. On Saturday last the par ties, with thoir seconds and others, went to tho place designated to have it out. A ropo was !,tretched, and the two pugilists shook hands preliminary to en tering tho ring. For some reason Mc Oraw did not wait, but commenced tho fight during the hand-shaking, nnd deait his blows so powerfully that Donley, af ter boing knocked down three or four times, retreated, saying that he had had enough. But "Art." Wood, his second, took a revolver from his pocket and told him he roust whip Med raw, aud at the same time informing the bystanders that ho would shoot any one who interfered. Donley returned, seized McGraw by tho collar, and kicked him. The kick caused McGraw to boud over, and as he did so, Donley hit him on tho neck with all tho force he could command. The blow burst an artery, and McGraw died in two minutes. When he fell, aud by standers exclaimed that he was dead, tbo notorious "Art." swore that ho wasn't dead and offered to back up his assertion by a bet of $25. Directly, "Art." started Donley off on his owu horse, and he got out of reach as soon as possible. He went to a ravine near Ovid, left his horse, aud concealed himself. We bear that he was found in tho ruviuc on Mon day, disabled, having fallen from a cliff. Farmerville is notorious for bloody af frays.
