The poet says, "A thing ef beauty I* a Joy forever," and certainly the icntiment was illustra ted in the beautiful scone that presented itself at Miss Albergotti's School, at Orangeburg on May-day, 1869. Fair Queen, fair Queen, we greet thee with a long and joyous shout. The clustering rose and flowers for us, bring out, bring out. Come one, come all, and turn ye out tliis day To see our queenly Susie, our chosen Queen of May, For we are all her subjects and we can say this day, We love our queenly Susie, our chosen Queen of Muy! Come all ye romping boys, and all ye fair haircd girls, Come all ye flower-crowned maidens and grcc* your Queen of May. Flora, (Miss K. J. Clark,) then as cends tho stage, strewing flowers on her way, and recites the following : I'm Flora, I'm Flora, pray view my sweet flowers, They are fragrant and fresh from the late "April showers, They arc blooming and bright, They're a pure delight, To such spirits of youth and of hope as nrc ?ours. 'Tis tho first "of May ! now these buds and flowers, I'll strew around me in fragrant showers, And their sweets shull rise, As a sacrifice To the loveljf Queen of those rosy hours! At tho conclusion of Flora's address, the children sang with thrilling pathos and beauty, tho song, "Who shall be Queen ?" after which the Queen is escor ted to tbo throne. Then follows the ceremony of The Coronation. The Crowner (Miss M. Elincy) ap prouches with tbo vernal crown of flow ers und repeats the following : "Mine is u tender and. delightful of fice?a bright link in the chain of mem ory, which 1 trust, will never become dim. What I am now about to do. in compliance with the will of my com rades, may appear very (rival to souie, but slio who views it iu its true light, will here discern the seal of disinterested love. It is the crowuing of u class mate, till expression of the warm OstOCin of friends?it is tho syrnjaUliy of huarts, that for long years have toiled and strug tjled together, up the hill of knowledge, and not yet upon its summit, would pause a moment by tbo wayside to cull a few ??????, to wreathe the brow of ono who ia dear to them, We arc a band of sis ters, and have eome to greet oar Queen. This is shuply our object, and while we gather around her, and place this em blem, of oar regard upon her brow, as yet unfurrowed with care, we pray that tho choicest blessings of the Father may rest like the promised dovo npon her. Rest upon thee sister I Reign ovor our hearts ni peace 1 Lot thy lovo be with out dissimulation as the Scriptures en join. Then, though this crown which wo now place upou thy head may wither, we will arise on Eternity's morning to discern among the white robed, with tho crown of pure gold upon her head, our' present Queen 8ue i" After tho pronunciation of this*beau tiful address, to which tho fuir young speaker did ample justice, she placed the crown upon the head of tho beautiful Queen of May (Miss Sue Dibble.) Then followed beautiful addresses from tho different members of the Queou's escort. Time and space forbids our giv ing them all iu full. Suffice it to enumerate the officials iu her Majesty's lovely train, all of whom delivered ad dresses of greetiug in a manner highly creditable to themselves, and their in structress. While this is being sung the flowers march two at a time and make their offerings to tho Queen, and at it* con clusion came the Queen's Speech. Far more is prized, the love that placed me here, Elevuted iu brief state, And foremost seated where ench maiden is my peer, Yet 'round me wait. N'ow hear ye the laws that shall govern my State, Which all arc called to obey; Lo! we banish from our realm, grief, envy and hate The whole of this beautiful May. Let all of my subjects other* pleasure pursue; Then pcaco and joy will reign, And gladness distil like the morning dew, Te keep away sorrow and pain. Let laughter and mirth and frolic prevail; And gather the flowers of May ; Alas' joy like them, is bat fleeting and frail And too apt to fade in a day. May my reign as your Queen, which ends with to-day The tie that bound us not sever, But keep green in your heurts this fair May day As a joy gained forever! The song ??We go to fulfil our glad mission to earth," concluded the exercises of the occasion. While it. was being sung the merry party and their Queen descended the stage to receive tho plaudits and well-done of the delighted audience, which they so well deserved. After the exorcises were concluded the "hildreii, with their friends, and an im mense company of visitors sat down to a most delicious and bounteous repast, which like the recitations, the tableaux of those children and those fl ?wers, as they grouped together in tho harmony and concord of beauty presenting u unique und inexpressibly bright picture, which has indelibly dttgue rooty ped itself upon the retina of memory?is far above ? >ur ability to describe. The winde affair was, as we have Haid, one of the most re chcrrhr and .perfect that Urungcburg has ever witnessed. It is not our object to trumpet the praises of the lady by whose talent, tuste und tact tiro bright scene was conceived and performed?but who that witnessed it, in the brightness of its beauty can fuil to see that all its radiance is reflected upon her, aud that -a crown fairer und more perennial than that wreath.id with flowers, is piacod upon lur brow?the crown, which success bestows upon patient und untiring effort?the crown of victory won upon the field of life's most arduous duty?the crown of rxyoicing awaiting all who, "acting Well their part," magnify and ennoble their office. S'itum unique ! We shall uot forget that holy scene, that festival of children, that carnival of beauteous innocence, the cadence of their sweat song, the soft ehaunt of their in fant voices, the childish tones silvering into murmured echoes, mellowing ,ntn spirit whispers of the past, their rociu tions in the lisp of sinless purity, but in the perfect pause and accentuation conned only at woman's knee, breathing of that hallowed love?earth's only tran script of that Spirit who hath said, "Of such is Heaven 1" yes ! lingoring echoes in the corridors of memory in spirit tones of eloquence, thrilling emotions, such as human artioulation seldom stire. It has boon said that the historic scene of tho immolation at Thermopylae stands forth to day an eloquent illustration of Grecian patriotism?truly this bright picture, with its loveliness, its flowers, its beauty, will linger in tho memory as a fitting illustration and expression of pu rity, innocenco, love I -????????^-? We present this week the Salutatory of Mr. J. Felder Meyers, a young gentle man self-made, sclf-cdueated and to the "ninnor-born." His efforts through our columns will be to allay, if possible, po litical excitement in our County, and bring about a more amicable fooling among all classes. Minnigan, we learn, is doing a good and pruiseworthy work in his settlement. lie has organized a colored Sunday School of 6(1 scholars, and has, for the last nine months kept it in successful operation.
