LOCAL ITEMS. SATURDAY, MAY 8, 1809. THE ORANGEBURG NEWS IS TUB ONLY PAPER PUBLISHED" IM ORANGEBURG COUNTY, AND PAYS WEEKLY VISITS TO EVERY HOUSE AND HAMLET 1ST THE COUNTY. All For Our County's Good.? We place this week the name of J. Felder Mkybrs, Ext., before our read ers as an Associate Editor of the Oranqbuuo Nkws. As ho will make bis bow to the gracious publio in our taest, we will let him blow his own ' trumpet. Court Week and Ralesday.?The past has been a busy wcok for Orange burg. Crowds of farmers, with wagons, burses, vehicles of ovory description, ex cept the velocipede, flocked to the Town ,<on Monday lust, aud the "bustle of busi ness" has scarcely diminished during the Week. Any one, even the loafer could see that there was life in the County yet, and money aud healthy trade in the fcwn. The Court of General Sessions and Common Pleas met on Monday at three o'clock IV M. His Honor Judgo Carpenter looks Well, aud commenced the business of the Bession with his usual expeditiuu, courte sy, and knowledge of the law, which have alseudy commanded tor him the re spect of tho Bar and tho community, both here und in Charleston. H'R im partial dispensation of justice, nnd his eminent ability as n jurist and lawyer, ure certainly distinguished causes ol' grat ulation to the people of our County. Attorney-General Chamberlain, is present, and attends to his busiucss with a tact and ability, which eminently fit him for his office. Tho Criminal Docket has been pretty . well disposed of, and the Civil Docket, < quite a large one, has been commenced. This will probably occupy the Court for two weeks longer. The May-day celebration ot Miss Al bergotti's school ou Saturday last was de < cidudly n pRrfuyt miccc.-s und puu of tho nicest und prettiest a Ha its of the kind that we have ever witnessed. The bright vision of childhood, heigh tened by its own appropriate sin round ing* of flowers and wreaths?crowned with the bright aud happy intelligence that spoke in every conscious eye,' and accentuation, symbolized and "'uttering a voice" of beauty aud taste iu tho deco rations and declamations, presiding like tho "genius of the place''?characterized the occasion us a bright success, and spoke eloquently the praise of the in stitution. High, holy, dignified and graceful is the office of "tho teacher," assuming all the elements of "tho beautiful and tin1 good" wheu woman fills it. The taste displayed in the scenic effects and the selee?:^ for the occasion showed that woman presided ?the per fection uttuiucd by the pupils, evidencing tho care in their training, proved her well fitted for the position of tcaeher. The addresses of the children were beautiful scloctious aud beautifully pro nouueed, the flowers were nature's May day offering to the bcautc >us Qucon of May?tho repast, iu itself, was one of tfce most recherche, thiugs that has ever gladdened Oraugeburg, nnd partaken of beueuth tho bright influence of beauty, intelligence and happiness, by that gay and brilliant company, was superb. We cannot exagerato the praises of Ahe cakes und refreshu.ent, of the beauty .of the whole scene, nor of the taste and .qualities of her, whoso training and ?"fostering iuflucnce" developed the per Jectiou of her pupils, und whose hand and heait conceived und curried out the bright uffuir. Wo will publish a full account and programme of the exercises next week. We had a regular North-easter Wed liesduy night, which blew, and blew, aud Coronghly drenched tho "old woman" our mother-earth. Senator Sawyer has plueed us undor obligations for u copy of the Reports of the Special Commissioner of the Revenue ? for 1868. It is a compact volume of tf2 pages, und contains vory valuable tables, a?d much important mutter for the gcaural reader. t Wo receive letter after letter "speak iug praises" of tho Oranuehuru News, Aod not only praises, but sending the "wherewith" to* conduct it safely on to an good old ago. <" Real Ketute sold here lust Monday at a treujondous advance. Lund that would not ha?c brought 50 cents an acre twelve mouths ago, sold for three und four dot I Iura an acre. We are glad to see it and to know that theso prices were paid by farmers, not speculators. Reynolds' Keaoers.?We arc in debted to the publishers for a copy of the Third of the Series of Reyuold's now Readers, Bot of books which have be come justly popular. Prof. Reynolds has in his third reader takou infinite puins to make it both attractive and use ful, and wo are huppy to say, that his success is an eminent, oue. Copies of this book cau be had at the establishment of Mr. Kirk Robinson. Mr. Salinas, us will be seen by refe rence to advertising columns has "opened Store at Rainberg," and is now ready to supply all who may favor him. Oity, and is stopping a? Willard's. He is en route for Cincinnati and Louisville, where be will meet other gentlemen of South Carolina who visit those cities in the interest of the Rlue Ridge Railroad, which is u short link of road through the Rlue Ridge Mountains, connecting Anderson, South Carolina, with Kuox ville Tennessee. When completed, this road will give the shortest route from the great West to the South Atlantic sea-const, and will do much to develop the c numercial and agricultural resources of both South Carolina and sections of other adjacent States. This will be the nearest and best route to tho seaboard J for u very large section of the Western country, for the produce of which it npens an outlet never obstructed by ice, whence there is direct and short commu nication with one of the most important of our foreign markets, either to buy or sell in, the West Indies." SMALL.? The pictures of Gens. Lee and Jackson, that formerly hung in the Charleston Council Chamber, hnvo been removed by the new po/rcrs that be, und will be replaced by pictures of Gens. Grant and Sherman.? Courier. Nut only small, but the littlest kind of small. Adding th i pictures of Gens. Grunt and Sherman lit the decorations of the Council Room is well and proper, but to remove those of (leus. Lee and Jackson is small, VOry. Gen. Jackson is a dead hero : what "small" souls may say to the eoutrary notwithstanding.? And Gen. Lee. why it would be perfectly ridiculous to place him on the same foot ing with the :;sma?" mau that had his ?picture removed. FURNITURE.?We call the attention of those in want of furniture to the ad vertisement of Mr. White. He is an old hand at the business, prompt and atten tive and will give entire satisfaction to all who may favor him with their orders. Messrs. John 1). Stocker & Co., has an advertisement in our paper this morning which ought to attract the at tention of every one. Mr. Stocker has just returned from New York, with a heavy stock ol goods, purehuscd for cash and at low rat';;', und which, of course, they are now anxious to dispose of at only a small advance on cost. Cull and examine their stoek. A Palmetto Silver Medal, with the name uf J. W. Reed engraved on it, is in the possession of the Curo ina Spartan to be delivcied to its rightful owner. Fowler is lecturing in Missouri on free schools, and a paper in Detroit fays that he is thus doubly a fiee-knowledgist. Tho "oldest Mason" has now turned up in Canada, in the person of Charles MoKcwen, who was "raised" in Ireland in 1771?. W hite Feather, an Indian chief, is lecturing in th West on "flic Aineri o.iu Indians," and dresses und sings in illustration. Oue of the New York papers says that the very purest milk that can bo obtained in that city contains fully one third of water. Philadelphia ? ,*v?j tout the slopping of s'?dewalka by cleanly servant girls \ The political campaign in Virginia will be an active one. Both Wells and Walker will stump the State.
