The Southern Elections,
In three of the Southern States the cle^ons^
?re over. In Louisiana, out of about 125,000
who registered, thoro wore only somo 75,000
votes oast at the election. In Alabama, out of
166,289 who registoreo\ there wore'only 93,000
votes cast. In both States, the probability is

Genera] Hayes' majority for Govornor of
Ohio is 12910. The voto is the heaviest ever
east in the Stato.
It is stated that $1,373,000 has been paid
out In tho Southern districts for reconstruc
tion expenses, leaving a deficiency to be made
good at the coming session of Congress.
A petition has been presented to the Pope
praying tfiat the Italian troops be allowed to
oefmpYi Romo. It was signed by 12,000 Ro
mans, ami was. presented by the City Council,
headed by the Senator of Rome.
A man, ninety years old, was buried nt
Portsmouth, N. II. on Saturday, who had kept
his gravostono and his coffin in his garret foi
the last twenty years.
'?Why don't you trade with ino ?" said a
close fisted tradesman to a friend the other
day. The reply was characteristic: "You
have never invited me, sir. I have looked all

Large numbers of white men, are leaving them
in disgust. As their corruption aud dangerous
tendencies become known, they will be indig

The Fall Term of the Court of Common
Pleas for Marlboro District, now in session,
convened last .Monday, His Honor Judge
Glover presiding. Iu accordance with General
Order.*; a new .Jury was em panelled on Mon
day. Two negroes who hud paid their taxes,
vwcrc chosen, but us soon as ? they heard of the
fact, they loft fur parts unknown, one going
toward the North Carolina lino, and the other
taking the swamp, They did not appear wil
ling to sit on juries with white people. Several
important cases have been litigated nnd dis
posed of, aud it is quite probable that the
W'hole week will ho occupied in the trial of im

the 18th of September, 1858, Abraham Lin
coln said: "1 will say that 1 am not nor over
have been in favor of making votors or jurors
of negroes, nor qualifying thorn to hold office,
nor to intermarry with white people ; and I will
say in addition to this, that there is a physical
difference betweon tho white and black races,
which I believe will forbid tho two races Vs^ng
together on terms of social and political equal

whether Maryland has a State Government

in this case is a mere sham. What tho com
mitto intend to do is, to decide what t* a "Re
publican form of Government,"?not on any
evidence of facts, but according to their own
ideas; and then Congress is expected to apply
the rnle which they will thus lay down, to ail
tho*Stalesin succession. Last year it was held
that the Government of Connecticut was not
"Republican," nnd probably this year Ohio
will fall under tho samo condemnation. It
Would be rather curious if Congress should dis
cover that there wero only three or four "Re
publican" States* in the Union. Where would <
