Judok Lynch Holds Court in Adiikyillk
. ?Greenwood, August 21.?This morning
while Mr. William Monday, a respectable
citizen of this community, was in towu, i
vagaboud negro named Jake Davis assaulted
( Mrs. Monday, who is fifty years old, and
would have accomplished his ticudish pur
poso but for ihe uttack of a fierce yard dog
which frightened him away, leaving his vie
tun considerably bruised.
A posse of cool yet determined men, both
white and black, wcro soon scouring tin
country for hiiu. and caught him at Ninety
. Six this evening ubout 1 o'clock. He wrn
immediately carried before Mrs. Monday
who readily and without a shadow of doub
identified him. Several colored women ei
the place testified to his presence there abou
the time the atsault was committed.
There being no doubt of his guilt, he wa;
quietly led to an open field near the house
bound to the trunk of a tree and shot t<
death.
There was no mockery or taunting on tin
part of the crow J. The opportunity wa:
offered Davis to pray but he declined it.
A more ordcily execution could not havi
taken p'nee in a well drilled army. Thi
men with the guns, some negroes amonj
them, formed a line fifiecn paces in front o
tho doomed man, and at the word "Fire!" i
simultaneous volley of bullets and bucktho
went whizzing through his bidy. He dice
wiihout a struggle.
Too much praise cannot be given to tin
colored people, who manifested such an in
tense desire to have ihe wretch caught nii'l
punished.
The same negro committed no assault 01
a wiiite woman in this cenimunity a fevi
years ago, but as her character was qucs
tionablc he was allowed to go unpunished
