Dr. Emlle Welti, the new-elected
President of Swiiserland, was born at
Zntsaeh, in the canton of Aran, in 1825,
of a wealth/ and distinguished family.

Council in 1886, and sinco then ho ha*
been elected to the highest office of that
littlo republic five times?in 1869-72-76BO-84
and now for the year 1891.
Welti in politics belongs to the Center,
With a pronounced tendency to favor the
Right or tho Conservative party, although
ho may be better styled an Opportunist,
being flexible to tho exigencies of circumstances
in order to carry his point*.
Iir He is very reserved in matters
' " tlgiouM' character, prudent in
sctions, and an active, energetic and
tcalous statesman. Ho is the inspirator
of tho moderate party nnd enjoys the
sympathy of tho majority ol the Federal
Chambers. lie is very dignified, of rcflned
manners, nnd as much an observer
of strict etiquette as if ho bad been born
ind raised among princes. Nevertheless
ho is niTnble and of easy approach. Although
not tut brilliant an orator as
ftuchouuet, bis eloquence is admirable,
ind as a financier ho is regarded as tho
best in Hwif/.erland.

'The Citizens' Hnnk of Venango" ^
was a private bank in n town in Missouri. 80
The "Venango" part of the title had1 ^
been inherited from another bank, whichi
bad gone into liquidation years beforo,
and referred to some laud speculation in
connection with banking.
Our building was a plain two-story
brick standing at a corner, and tho interlor
was plainly furnished, as was the 8*'
rule in those days. To aid you to follow 6C<
