fore the people willing ihnt merit aloitt should win? Have we avoided foul Inn gunge and the smutty anecdotes that ofter characterize demagogues? Have our wards and deeds been moralizers among the peo pie with whom we have mingled, tending to elevate enlighten and refine? If we have been true men in this true Mnce af the word we have not run in vain, even though defeated. And wo should re. joice that our beloved county has better nod more competent men for office than ourselves, nod we should strive to imitate their wisdom and virtue. Hut, my brother, if wc have been defeated by demagogues, then out defeat is the more honorable. ROTATION OF CR0P8. Hy a scientific rotation of crops our farms may be continually improved and farming be made a pleasant and profitable occupation. While traveling over our own county I am glad to find that a few thoughtful and energetic farmers arc perceiving that a scientific rotation of crops may he made far more profitable than without regard to ^ rotation. I verily believe that the pea, corB rectly used as a renovator and fertilizer oi our farms, is much more profitable than our commercial fertilizers. The following is the rointiou adopted by one of the best farmers of our county on his farm which is mostly upland: First year, cotton; 21 year, cm, runniog rows 7 feet apart witli a row of peas between ; .Id year, wheat or oats, followed with peas on stubble ; then cotton ngn<n. This rotation gives four crops every three years. His reasons for this rotntiou are apparent on reduction to every scientific farmer. Corn and peas are aasily produced after cotton, the pen-vine being the best of fertilizers. This corn crop may be follow.^^cd by small grain before winter, which is not the case with a cotton croD. Then the wheat or oats, supplemented with pens, leaves the soil well fertilized for cotton again. The red nit and the pea are the salvation for our farms, end if wo will trust in them and use them, instead of these thousand and one brands of H'fht weighted and bogus, commercial fertilizers, that laugh at out calamity and mock when payday comctli then these worn hills of our dear old South land, would rise up at all times and bless u< with nhundiint harvests.
