Gnffney City is fast becoming an education centre of ne insignificant proportions. A centre, too, in which mental culture is not stilted above heart culture, but in which the one is the properly adjusted colloteral equipoise of the other, the two combining to construct the onl}'true manhood and womanhood. To this grand work Geffncy City Male and Female Seminary is ullied, with two other institutions here. This institution has just passed through another most successful commencement exercises which marked its growth and progress, both in number and in advanced scholarship and literary grade. Dr. Lauder, of Williamston Fernalo College. At times the audiences were thrilled with enthusiastic delight, so that subsequent rendition became unavoidable, to satisfy tho delighted auditory. The commencement Skkmon was preached by Rev. W. W. Daniel, of Yorkville, now completing his quad,cmiiutu of tho Methodist pastorate of tliat town. It was on the spiritual demonstration of this gospel dispensation, aud its adaptability to tho surroundings, before a largo congregation assembled in the main hall of (he Seminary. At night the same preacher preached in the same hall, with characteristic ability, to another large congregation. Monday.Moumnu, Junk 17. The annual address beforo the "McArthur Fraternity" occupied this hour. This organization of the former pupils and alumni of the Seminary was instituted, nud is continued with interest, to perpetuate the founding of the institution by I'rof. W. F. McArthur. The address was delivered by W. A. McGowan, Esq., your present popular School Commissioner. It was characterized by depth of thought and argumont and illustration, to show, that etch man, under Uod, is the constructor of his own character and degree of success in this life, and that, under our system of government, there was no place to which the humblest might uoc inspire. It did credit to the speaker an 1 the organizition ho represented, and was calculated to promote n healthy stimulation to action and elfort. ?Monday Evening. a Declamation and the annual Phi Sigma Debate were the leading features, in addition to the music. Prohibition?an original speech, by J. L. Gilbert, \V. Claude Mc Arthur and Jas. W. Dull' exhibited cmbryc oratory of promise, from good selections. The question of debate was: "Uesolved, that tho Protection Policy is the host for American interests.'' 1'his complex qucs tion of p?liticil economy, now agitating the American mind, and engaging the at tendon of statesmen and legislators, would have seemed to be loo deep and profounc and intricate for such youthful minds. Such is the modern science of music, which seems to be rising and stretching itself to keep pace with the culture and adornment o f the human head and heart. Misses Thomson, Sams, Daniel. Litilejoho, Law ton, Clarke, Lipscomb, Nance, McArthur, Fowler, Bishop, Holmes, Carroll, Smith, Waters, and Mr. Kiscn and Mr. "Call John," were of this delightful department. The reception which followed was rcchtrcht. No dissipating dance corrupted the heart* and heads of the assembled youth and beauty. Ice Cream aud other refreshments were rcved in the large reception room. The happy bum of voices and graceful gallantry continued, not to unrestricted limit, but at 12 the ovcr-liangiug bell of the steeple marked the quiet inching away of the joyful company, and the commencement exercises of 1889 were remanded to the successful past records of the institution. A few days ago while laboring under religious excitement, Mrs. Charlotte Allen, the seventy year old widow of the dead mun confessed to two colored servants that she committed the crime. Sho said she and her husband had trouble as to \ who was the rightful owner of the furni , and iu order te settle the dispute she gave her husband morphine in his ten. Allen , fell asloep in the garden.
