McKissirk, in Charleston, on 111 e !i8th of March last, before the Memorial meeting of the Vandcrbill Malevolent Association on the death of Cajd. F. ir. Dawson. The next spoiltcr was (Jul. 1. G. McKis" sick, of Union, who is in the city attending the Sun lay-aohool convention, lie was a warm, personal friend of Capt. Dawson, and hie t?mohing remarks were appropriate nnd eloquent. Himself n gallant Confederate soldier, wlioso rocord is well known in South Carolina, the tribute to the memory of his lamented friend eoraes with especial emphasis, nnd the tenderness with which he spoke last night evidenced that tho old soldier's heart was sad and that his eloquout words catre from the bottom of his heart. Col. McICissick said: Ladies and Gentlemen: I am glad that I am present on this sad occasaiou. The eulogies paid to onr lamented frioud heretofore and to-night have met with a warm response in this sorrowing heart. My long ncquaintauca with Cnpt. Dawson and full knowledge of his history had decide ii?nr?? seil mo with his groat wot ill, botli of licrnl and heart. To admire liitn you had but to know hi in?open, lrank noil social?his fremlship was ns pure as the snow Hakes ere it reaches our earth. And I, for one, more than admired Cnpt. Dawson as a gallant Confederate soldier; 1 loved him devotedly os a brother. When tho American colonies wcro strug" gliug to achieve their independence thai bravo and generous stranger, M irquis dc Lafayette, left Ins home, us comforts and plea; uros, and sailed across the broad Atlantic and shed his blood and spent his fortune In the grand struggle for American independence, thereby inscribing his name 011 tho roll of fame and endearing himself to the hearts of the American people. Ttieods, the American colonies had their bravo and generous Lafayeite, and the Southern Confederacy had iis brave and generous Lafayette in the person of the bold, daring young Englishman, Francis W. Dawson. lie too left his home, its pleasures its comforts and its lia'lowcd associations, and humbly worked his passage across tho Atlantic, and imperilled his lifcaud shed his blood in tho cause eo holy and so dear to our hearts. IIis distinguished bravery on many a battlefield won the admiration of his officers, und the vrvwo v.l ?*.?w ""l'-'"1 :i-~; 1 i?t ?ui.um Mivnimuilin C311<IUCt promotion. 11 is untimely death deeply affected his old general, now Governor Kitzhugh Lee, of Virginia, who at once poured forth his grief in a touching eulogy of his brave stall' officer who had so gnllnntly fought by his side on ninny a hard fought, field. When the flag we loved so well was furled forever, and tlio Southern States were crushed beucath the heels of the victor and 1 the vandal, Capt Dawson, with his gigantic 1 intellect profound learning and untiring energy, could have chosen other fields and 1 have gone to the North ur West and achieved I distinction in his chosen profession, but lie resolved to remain with the South, that her people should bs his people and her God should be his God. Locatiug iu your graud old city, he resolved to cling to the prostrate State, to share ? er * fate, to drink with her the bitter cup of j humiliation and misrule, preferring poverty i * and bumhlcucss to wealth and position purchased at the sacrifice of honor and principle. No son of this grand oil fcfialo struggled , harder for her redemption than Capt, Dawsou, and until the l ist tin aunt of his glori ous life the priyer of his great heart was lor the happiness and prosperity of not only South Carolina, but of tiic en'iro Amorican Union.
