The following dispatch was received by the Aft<"J and Courier; ' V \cox, duly 4.? The melancholy news reached this city this evening from Copse Hill, Columbia county, that l'aul 11. llayno, the South's beloved poet, lies at death's door, with little or no cliattco of recovery. A few weeks ago while engaged upon his labors with his characteristic energy and enthusiasm, ho avas t suddenly prostrated by a faiuting spell. Rallying eomowitat, be, to quiet the apprehensions of his family, made light of his illness. But it soon developed that ho was partially paralysed, and physicians were sumtnouod. They decided that his trouble aroso frotn a oiot of blood upon his brain and that no liopo of his recovery existed. Ho has yet moments of consciousness, through which tho gtaud fait a and soul of tlio matt still shine brightly. It will be hard for the peoplo of tho douth to rcalizo how closo they aro t*> an irreparable loss, and hopes will rise iu every heart and prayers that the shadow of death through a dispensation superior to man's judgment may be lifted from Copse Hill. Townseud in his song entitled "Coming thro' the Rye" was accorded the same compliment, while l'rof. E. J. By 'J o'clock Sunday morning <ho crowd had begun to assemble in Chapel Hall to listen lo the Commencement sermon by Ilishop Thompson . At 11 a. m. 2,500 persons, perhaps, in all, gathered to hear this eminent divine. In the evening exercises wore held in the Chopel aud the same giltcl speaker held the audience spell hound as before. Monday the Junior exercises took place, and were l'airly creditable to the clas3 nud to the institution which they represented. Tuesday morning the Senior class cntettoined an immenso audience with well delivered speeches of their own composition, tlioir subjects being Fruits, Churning, liog and llotniny, and various other subjects showing forth tho talent and energy of the A. aud M. College boy9. Wc thon devoted several hours to admiring tho wonders of nature, industry, intellect and civilization, such was tho labratory museum and other curiosities. That afternoon tho Lee Guards volunteered an exhibition drill. Wo think even to a critical observer the drill was entirely creditauic to these youug gentlemen. The graduating exercises that night were very interesting and largely attended. Wednesday the crowd gathered early and there were many more than could tiud restiug places in the chapel. Lieut.-Gov. Prcsidcut Leo then gave tho diplomas to tlioso young men who had etudied so hard an<l so richly deserved this reward of merit. There wore sixteen graduates. Wo then enjoyed walking over the beautiful grounds and chatting with pleasant friends. Wednesday night a hall was givcu in the College by tho students. Everyone lingered till tho " wee small hours" of the night were advancing, and then with merry " good nights " all dispersed to their homes, the happier for having been together.
