Intkukstini; K km in i*i esokm.?Yesterday, the 1st of May, in the memories of Gen. Johnstoue Jones, is full of interesting and abidiug recollections. It was the anniversary of the day on which lie met, for the first and last time, the chiefs of ilie Confederate government, then overthrown l>y the force of aims, themselves essaying to escape from the victorious pursuers. Geu. Jones was a guest of Gen. Wallace, at his residence at Union Court House, i?. C. That gentleman at the time was a prisoner on parol, and his son* was a comrade of Gen. J., both bclougiug to White's battallion of Infantry. On that day the gentlemen comprising the Confederate cabinet rode up to the door of Gen. Wallace s residence and halted. They were under the escort of General Ferguson s cavalry, and were on thcir^vay to tho Southward. The hospitalities of the house were &r<ivviuiij uuu uigt'iuijr unuvruu, uiiu aa irmiKiy accepted, the halt however, being only for dinner : that meal was cxtamporancous, but elegant. The party cousistcd of Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States : John C. Breckenridge, Secretary of war; Judah P. Benjamin, Secretary of State, aud Gen. Ilegau, Post Master General, Gen. llraxton Bragg was also of the party. The demeanor of Mr. Davis was quiet, courteous and self-possessed. He was cheerful, nnd he passed a part of the dinner hour with the little daughter of Gen. Wallace upon his knees, with whom he interchanged many playful words. Benjamin was bright and cheerful ; the others were quiet nnd thoughtful. When the party had dined, they resumed their ride. Mr. Davis bade tho ladies aud guests a cheerful "good bye : " and as he shook hands with them lie said. "I am goiug across the Mississippi, and 1 hope souio day we may meet under more favorable auspices." A few days thereafter he was captured. The others made their escape; and their subscqheut history is well known.?Ashtcill- Citizen. * Gen. Jones is mistaken, iu saying ttliat the young man alluded to was Gen. Wallace's son. It was Mr. 11. ll. Wallace, now President of the Merchants' and Planters National Bank of this place, and half brother of Gen. Wallace. I.uok Gi t Pott Fhaius asi> Imitations.? Take no other.
