And this new system has been inaugurated by our chemist, Dr. St. Julien Ravonal, ?. - ? vuiuugu cuv lunirumeotailkj Ol UIS OOD1pound, called Ash Element. /ait as the greatest and most useful inventions in mechanics are always the most simple, so that oven a child oan understand and use them, so it is in every other affair of life; the most useful and effeotive things are always simple and easily understood, so that from their very simplicity, indeed, they often escape our observation. The operations of nature, so far as they concern us practically, are plainly to be understood ; but it wo attempt to penetrate beyond this, we fiud ourselves involved in inextricable difficulties. But although the J mind is thus eminently finite, yet it is prone to overlook things that are near and superficial and reaches after the remote and the profound. - We find this tendency in agriculture as well as in other departments of industry. We are digging and delving to great depths, often when the object of our search is just on the surface. Hence we have elaborate treatises on agricultue, based on faneiful theories aod hypotheses, ignoring plain facts, having seemingly for their purpose the aggrandisement of tho author ruthnr thnn tlio o<l?annA ment of agrionlture. The laws of nature aro inflexible, and she will serve us only as we observe her laws. Obviously, then, our study uiust be to find out her ways. And in the pursuit of this study wo must be governed by observation and experiment. Nature must answer our questions, and net roan. For instance, if we want to grow wheat we roust learn by observation what are the wants of wheat, and so with cotton and corn. If we fiud that wheat wauts Nitrogenous, and peas inorganic material we must supply accordingly. If we find that after wheat Nitrogen is diminished in the soil, and that after peas the soil is replenished with Nitrogen, we have gained important information. And so we will go on and observe next the chemical processes whioh take place in the soil, by which the reaction of one ingredient upon another produces a third diverse from either. Nor will we fail to observe the vital properties of plants by which they effect such changes in the constituents of me soil as enaDies mem to appropriate idgredieDts that would be otherwise unavailable. In this connection Dr. Liebig soys "I, have long since given up the prevalent idea that fertilisers act in the mere capacity of furnishing plant food, and hold that they do this only to a certain extent, but that their main function consists in elaborating and tnakiDg plant food out of ingredients found in the soil." Now, although the pursuit ot this study is measurably within the power of every man, yet to attain to a high degrco of success requires a special talent combined with opportunity. The talent comes by tho endowment of God and by education, the opportunity is by the furnishing of man. Now it happens by fortuitous ciroumstanoes, that we nave the combination of the two under the most favorable conditions, nd we begin our observations: we find thst cotton, the cereals and grasses, will not thrive except in soil where there is an excess of Nitrogen. At the same time, we find thst Legumim noids, (peas, beans, &o.,) are indifferent to Nitrogen, but that they require minerals ?ashes, say?in other words, an Ash Element. We find that ootton, the oerealsand grasses, leaves the land bereft of Nitrogen; but that the Leguminoids, under this speefio treatment, leave the land replenished wit Nitrogen. Aoie (hii u a mott tignificant /act, and it is, indeed, the key to the whole problem. By this, it wound seem, that just as in the animal kingdom, one animal is made sub servient to the life of another, so in the vog eUble kingdom. A* herbivorous animals are food for the Carnivorous, so Leguminous plants are meant bj nature to be food for the Grauiinaeious. If, then, we want to grow oereals nod grasses, it follows, that we must learn how to grow Legutninoids. We again resort to observation : and we learn that Legumiooids require an Ash Element, and that of a p irticular quality and oompoiitioo, and witn this applied, they are eomparatively indiflerent to the other oonstitutents of the soil. Furthermore. that Leguminoid* grown without this compound, do not subserve the seme good offioe to tab-, soquont orops. Tbej will improve the hind, but not to the seme degree} and their continuous use as a fertiliser, without the aid of minerals, has not been found satisfactory. Now. because Leguminoids will grow in a soil dofioient in Ammonia, we must not, V ' tneretoro, suppose that they do not require it. On the contrary, tbey are grow feeder* of Ammonia, bat their nature ia each that they get their supply almost entirely from the atmosphere. In this way, they appropriate a very large amount of Ammonia, and by a process peculiar to themselves, they (through the sap and roots) deposit it ail in the ground, there to enrich the land , f>r other crops. And not only so, they also effect such changes in the minerals thai have been applied to themselves, as to render them also more available tc subsequent crops. Now, in connection with this fact, that peas, and other Lcguininoids, do thus enrich the land, we find other facts apparently contingent, vis.: that the fertilising capacity of the DC as is in nmnnrf inn tn 1 , r--| *V viau IU4UIIII CU of the vines. Also, (hat tho longer the < growth of the psas, the greater the amount supply to tne soil, lr, therefore, the peas are supplying Nitrogen during a'l the time i of their growth, it follows that the longer thev remain on the land, the more Nitrogen will they supply; they should, therefore, be t allowed to die on the ground; and then, if i desired, they may be turned under; or, at i least, the turning under should be delayed ) as long as possible. j It seems also evident, that the peas can I perform but ono office at a time. If they < aro expected to feed the land, they cannot t be expected at the samo time to serve also as food for man and beast; they must, there- I fore, be unmolested. - < And, lastly : we observe that the benefit I to the soil is cumulative?that is, there is, < year by year, more Nitrogenous matter sup- i plied by the peas than is consumed by the following orops. So that the lands are un- i dcrgoing progressive annual improvement t ?quite the contrary of the results of agri- t culture as ordinarily praetioed. s Now the application of all thit it very i simple: In our experience, wheat and i oats aro the most profitable winter crops, < and Bermuda or jdint grass the most profit- ' able summer crop. s We will say, then, that we want to grow i these crops. Of o tho Legutninoids, there are a great many p varieties?some wild and some cultivated, t< some growing in the winter and some in the b summer. Of the winter-growing varieties, p the wild vetch, or rabbit pea, is the most available; and of the summer-growing b varieties the eoatmon re<l or OOW pel. a To plant wheat and oats, select high and s thoroughly drained land, plow the land in ti May or June, and sow upon it about five u hundred pounds of Ash Element and two v bushels peas, per acre, and harrow both in o together. In the fall, when the vines have v died down, or the planting season is at hand, turn them under, broadcast the seed t of tho wheat or oats, and harrow in. b Instead of turning in the vines they may I be burned off, and the seed turned in with ii the Nischwitch Harrow without plowing.; q or, if the vines (through their extreme luxuriance) will not die in time, and cannot be turned under, then tho oats may be sowed A broadcast upon the top of the green vines, d The seed will in time reach the gronnd l where it will find sufficient lodgment and fc moisture, and upon the vines being killed n by frost, a beautiful crop of oats will ap- c pear. a The chief objection to this last plan is, that the seed is liablo to be molested by birds and rats. All these plans will do well, but we would decidedly prefer the firtt; that is the plowing and harrowing. To make a meadow of Bermuda Grats, select a field (if practicable) already possessed by the grass; otherwise procure a supply of the grass roots, ehop them up, scatter, them unniformely over the field after a rain, and plow under. In the spring nlow up the field, and broadcast upon it five hundred pounds Ash Element, and two bushels peas per acre, and harrow in. Protect the peos from depredation, and allow them to die on the ground. In the fall, sow the seed of the native or the imported vetoh on the surfaoe. It will find sufficient oover in tho debris of the peas. The vetch grows from Ootober to May, when it seeds I aDunaanuy, aiea, ana, rotting on the ground, t supplies an abundanoe of Nitrogenous mat- t ter. Tbo following springs, the Bermuda t grass (the roots of whioh are in the land) ? will taae possession, and vield in July, one \ outting, another in October. Our landa are, year ) jTjj I , 1 1 '! 1 1 r by year, becoming richer and more valuable The amount of Nitrogenous matter anppli?i to the soil by this process is many timet greater thao can be supplied at the same expense by any other means. And, finally, the crops themselves are eminently roman< erative. Tho yield, in onr'experience, is, of wheat, twenty to thirty bushels to the acre ; of oats, fifty to sixty bushels ; and of Bermuda bay, four tons. With greater experience in the adaptation of this system, theso yields can no doubt be increased. The Bermuda grass hay is easily onred and easily kept. It is superior in nutrient properties to Northern hay, and is preferred by horses to any other, it, therefore, readily commands the best prioe. If it is not desired to raise hay, the vetch and sheep during the entire year. In the preparation of land for cereals the Rebel and Tory Pea are recommended as the best. Thoy aro vigorous growers, with a long lap-root which loosens the soil eighteen inches down ; the seed remains in the groond from autumn to spring without injury, and may, therefore, bo sowed in the Fall, with wheat, oats, &o., to succeed these irops in the spring. The seed, too, is very unall. The Ash Element is also an excellent feriiliicr for cotton and tobacco, and for orange ind other fruit trees and grape*. It mav >e used as above, or else applied alone, or so m posted with cotton seed or stable malure, 200 to 300 lbs. per aero. And finally we would caution our patrons igainst an impression which seems prevalent imong some of them, vis : that they can nake a compound of their own which will lubscrve the same purpose as our Ash Elenent Even granting that they know tho ngredients of our Ash Element (which we loubt) they cannot know the proportions. The formula was originated by l)r. Ravenel ind is known only to him. And even grantng that the materials are all identical, the esultant compound to the discriminating Ksrceptions of a plant may be totally differint, just as with the same materials one loctor may make a curative and another a wisonous mixture, and one cook a palatable ind another a nauseous dish. And even after getting the materials of he best quality, and in proper proportions, t is of great importance that they be thorughly incorporated, (so that the reactions reviously spoken of may take place,) and his can be accomplished to advantago only y machinery spcciully adapted to the purose. Otherwise, if imperfectly dono, you may e treating .one sulk Ik all, another to acid, another to lime, and 0 on, and thus injure the plants and destroy he whole usefulness of the compound. To ise the simile above, it would be like a pie rith all the meat on one side, tho mustard a auother and the salt on another--rot ery palatable. Another important consideration. All he materials for this compound are bought iy our Presidents, under the supervision of )r. Ravencl, and every possible precaution s used to get them pure and of the best [uality. - ??? Death Struggle Between a Cat and 1 Rattlesnake.?About three weeks ago, luring the beautiful sunny weather we have iad which induced the trees to bud and loom, I was walking in my garden one aorning, thinking about preparing for an arly starting for spring vegetables, when I aw a large rattlesnake sunning. My first mpulse was to go to the house, get a gun ind kill it. But looking around, I saw a rcry largo house cat cautiously creeping ipon the reptile. Anticipating a fight, and squally desirous of getting rid of the cat, vbich killed chickens. I conoludcd to wit less his attack upon the snake. The cat trawled upon its stomach, pulling along on Is feet, whisking its tail from side, to side, ind every now and then stretching its neck o view the snake. When about eight or en feet off the snake suddenly coiled up, prung, its rattle, faced the cat and darted ts forked tongue out rapidly. The oat tommenced a rapid circle around th j snake, o fast in fact that the eyes could hardly ;eep up with it. At lost it got near enough ind made a dart at its enemy, but through irovidential reason it went high above the nake, whioh also struck at the cat, thus ireaking its coil. The cat went too far and ?y the time it had turned to face its foe, he reptile was again coiled and ready for he attack. The same method was adopted tod carried on for four or fivo times, occu>ying at least half no hour. The oat wished o catch the snake, but seemed aware that f it missed the neok it would be certain loath. This deposition of eggs by tho second brood lays the foundation for the fir?t brood, which will make its appearance in fly form at the end of April or the beginuing of May, the following season. 6. The fist brood deposits its eggs on the youug wheat, rve, barley, or oats, during the month of May; its first preference being whoat. 7. The eggs thus deposited by the first brood develop the secona or summer brood, 1 which makes its appearance in August and September in the fly form, whin it deposits \ eggs on any young wheat that may be above ground, or, in the abseace of wheat, it migrates, or deposits on other cereal vegeta- j tion. 8. As this is really the only brood that it is necessary to oircumvent?for with its destruction a subsequent brood would be impossible?therefore farmers should harvest as early as possible, leave a long stubble, turn it deeply down with a subsoiler, or burn it off with fire. 9. If they neglect or decline to do this, then they should not sow the fall crop before the 15th of Ootober, and if the crop proves "backward," then bring it forward by fertilisers and cultivation in the following spring; or, 10. If thoy have not done this, and the crop is found to be badly infested, then turn it under with the plow, harrow it and roll it, and put in a crop of spring wheat the next season. 11. Catching sIawks.?Some one reeently asked Fanny Field and others, how to keep hawks from carrying off chickens. My plan is to oatch the hawks. Being much annoyed by them, 1 set a steel trap on top of a pole, set upright in the ground, and have caught, the last year, 17 hawks and 5 owls. Set the trap on a pole 6 or 7 feet high, in the open field, 100 or 200 rods from the house. No bait needed. Traps I use cost 35 oents apieco. The people first settling in the country between Brosd and Enoree Rivers, in the southern section of Union County, were of different religious persuasions. It is sertsin that some of these were Presbyterians ; as, for instance, the Ottomans, Hamilton* and Oordons, on Tyger river, about Hamilton's Ford; the Savages, Hughesee, Brandons, Kennedys and Youngs, about Brown's Creek and Broad river. Samuel McJunkin, Esq., settled on Tinker Creek, Deo., 1766 ; James Otterson was on Tyger river the same year. (See McAden's Journal in Foot'* sketches of N. and in Howe's history ?f| ? 1 The first place of worship need by Presbyteteriaii8 was Union church?so called because used in common by Episcopalians and Presbyterians before the Revolution?situated about five miles eastward of Union C. H. Scon after the war the Presbyterians erected a house of worship known as Brown's Creek, two and onehalf miles from the Village, on the I'inckney road. Of this church Samuel McJunkin, Joseph McJunkin, Wm. Kennedy, Thomas Kennedy, Christopher Brandon, Abram McJunkin and John Savage are known to have served as Elders, and perhaps others. The Presbyterian] population along the Enoree and Tyger rivers had a place of worship below Goshen Hill, known as Grassy Springs Cbnrcb. No Presbyterian Tastor is known to hare settled in Union County before 1704, when the RevWilliam Williamson became the Pastor of the Fair Forest church. In addition to his services in that oongregation he also supplied the Brown's Creek and Grassy 8pring churches to greater er lees extent. Before that period the people were dependant for gospel ordinances upon occasional tupplies. These supplies were mostly by preachers sent out from the North by the Synod of New York and Philadelphia, then the highest iudicatory of the Presbyterian church in the :ountry. As population advanced ministers settled in adjacent counties, prior to the Revolution, as, for instance, the Rev. William Richirdaon in Lancaster, Rev. Joseph Alexander, D. D., in York and the Rev. John Simpson, in Cheser. These ministers were not only active and tealous in their respective congregations but nrere a kind of general missionaries in all the lettlcments westward of their fields of labor. Among others who settled between the Broad tad Saluda rivers was a considerable coramulity of Friends, or Quakers. Their settlement vas made at a very early period, and extended tcrcss the country IVom Fish Dam ford to the iames* coWp\cuour"*mftlgl*?vyJLII?wkipa were . .here?as the Friends have been generally iverywhere?an industrious, orderly people.? They built two houses of worship?Cane Creek ind Paget's Creek. About the end ef the lost sentury they began moving to Ohio. They disliked some of the laws and usages of this ceunirv and they moved off pretty much in a body, sarly in this century, to Ohio and Indiana. inc ouuuing caueu v^ioo trees cnurun, wm jffered for sale and bought by Spill Glenn, with i view to its removal for a barn. An arrange, ment was made by sundry citizens to buy Glenn's right and let the house remain as a place of wor hip, which was effected. The men concerned in this transaction, principally, were Major Samuel Otterson, James Dugan, Esq., probably Elders of Grassy Spring Church, Mqjor Joseph McJunkin, Abram McJunkin, Elders of Brown's creek church, James Jeter and William Ilobson. It was presently occupied by several denomi' nations?each setting up a claim of right. This state of things continued till some twenty-five years ago, when referees decided that the Presbyterians were the legitimate owners of the property. Whether a Presbyterian church was ever formally organized at Cane Creek is to me unknown. The more probable supposition is that it grew into existence as an organized church* rather than so constituted by Presbyterial action. As has been before stated, the Rev. Mr. Williamson preached to the nearest churches. He removed from the Country in 1804 or 1805. He was succeeded at Fair Forest by the Rev. Daniel Gray, who also ministered at Brown's Creek and Grassy Spring Churches till his death in 1815. He was sucoeeded by the Rev. Joseph Hillhonse, who, also supplied Brown's Creek and, perhaps, Grassy Springs. In the time of the services of Mr. Hillhousj, a house was built in Unionvilie io tut puce or Brown e creek. Mr. iiiunouse left Fair Foreet church and plaeea connected with it, probably in 1823. After hie removal, Fair Forest was supplied by the Rev. Mr. Porter, whose residence was at Cedar Springs, in Spartanburg. lie probably was very little in Union below that church. About that time, Mr. Chesney, a Licentiate, probably of some Presbytery in the middle 8tates, oame to Unionville, and engaged in teaching ; also in preaching at Unionville and Cane Creek churches. His reputation was very high for scholarship and pulpit eloquenoe; but seems to have been very defective in common sense and moral stability. He studied Law and was admitted to practice at Union. He was somewhat intemper ate In hla habits and wu toon repudiated by the Church. He weal to Alabeaea and roee to eminence at the bar and on the bench. Just about that lime the cause of religion was greatly injured by the soolal custom of drink* Ing. One minister was deposed from the ministry soon after he left Union for drunkenness, but was Anally restored. The Her. J. p. Kennedy, of Laurens, appears to hare preached n part of his life at Grassy Spring obureh and perhips at other points in the County, either as stated or occasional supply. The Hot. Daniel Lewis Gray beeame pastor of of Pair Forest church about the year 1829, and also began preaching at Cane Creek and other points about the same time. lie had talent, seal and energy in the cause of Christ. Jeter and Berry Jeter, who had been made Elders, with their fan ilies joined the Baptists; and the Dr. turned out to preaching according to the faith and order of that denomination. About the beginning of 1885, the Rer. Aarrn Williama began to supply Cane Creek ehurch for half his time. His ministry continued till the end of 1888. Up to this time the Elders of the ehurch had been Major Samuel Otteraon and James Dogan, Esq. At this time Mgj. The regular steps were taken for his transfer to Bethel Presbjterj, with a view to his settlement as pastor of these congregations. Long, Esq., of this piaee, from seed brought by him from Texas, which certain* ly comes nearer offering all the desired qualities of pasture and forage plants than anything we have ever seen. In 1874 a freshet carried down the seed and disseminated them along the bottom lands of the Colorado river, whore the grass made its appearance the following spring, and so much were lbs farmers pleased with it that many of them have devoted their farms entirely to its production, finding U more profitable than oorn or ootton. Concho grass, sown broadcast in early spring, comes about like crab grass, bat grows more rapidly and has a much broader leaf. By the first of Juue it will attain a height of about tbreo to four feet on an averago, and showing more fodder than any grass we ever saw.
