Comments of tho Prccs. 117m/ the Leadinj ./untruth of Various Shades oj Opinion top about the /{esult in Ohio. Tlic magnet which drew the disaffected to the Republican ticket was the unmistakable firmness of the party fur equal rights in the South. Ha l the Republicans taken the highest ground on the currency, we beiieve they would have succeeded equally well and their victory would have had .( ' giMlto valu^i But the signilicanee of the victory dtcj^n the evidence which it affords (hut the people of Ohio, fairly representing tho people of the North, nro thoroughly aroused us to tho tendency of Democratic rule, and arc resolved to overthrow it wherever it has gained a footing.?New York Time*. Thfs decisive Republican triumph is of natiounf interest. Besides disposing of several prominent Ohio statesmen, it will inspire courng6 and hope in tho Republican parly throughout the United States. Kvcu locally it is of considerable importance. It extinguishes Senator Thurmnu's chances of reelection nnd puts an end to any lurking aspiration which K wing may have hatl to be Thurtuan'ssuccessor. But these local consequences arc as dust in the balance. The great signilicanee of the Ohio election lies in its influence upon national politics and its bcarincr on the selection of candidates anil the success of pnrtics in 1 lie great l'rodciitiul contest of next year. It makes it impossible for the Democratic candidate to betaken from Ohio, uml favors Tilden's chances of nomination by putting some of his principal rivals out of the field. Jlut in proportion as it improves Tiblcn's chances of nomination it diminishes his chances and the chances of any Democratic candidate for an election. If New York should follow the example of Ohio, Tildcn would simply lose his labor by intriguing nny further for the Democratic nomination, and he may prefer that some other candidate should lead the forlorn hope. The result in Ohio tends to a Republican success in New York, and should this bo the actual ell'ect, Tildcn nmy bid a long farewell to 1'resideutiui honors.?AVie York Herald. All that can be asserted positively of the result in Ohio to-day is that the Republicans have failed to take that great Commonwealth out of the wavering line of States doubtful for lHSit, and to plant it, as they hoped to plant it, in the van of the Republican column, where of obi it used to stand. Mr. Dlainc stands on as fair a footing to day in Maine as Mr. Sherman in Ohio. Mr. Kwing has been beaten, as be elected to be when at tlie outset of his canvass he deliberately abandoned the strong ground of an outright Democratic protest against the votes of President Hayes, and undertook to counter with his own financial theories the stalwart facts of a magnificent harvest iti the West, of unparalleled crops at the South and of uu inflowing tide of gold from Kuropo. It appears, even from the partial reports so far received, that the Democratic candidate in Ohio owes his defeat ciut'iiy 10 mc sicrn jjosiiiuy ltuvuu ^Turinftn-norn IfOtnnr'P^la oI l\.uui\tDl| 1 oliuly Ijy 1.13 Oimncial licrcsiex.York H'urhl. There is one peculiar feature about this laxpaying business: The small tax payers of the County are, generally, very prompt in paying, while the large tax payers hold on to their money to the very last minute the law gives ihem, and then, like Oliver Twist, cry for more.
