Death of Mro. Jan* Tweedy Batler.
This distinguished and venerated matron died
oa^tinday, 11th inst., at the resilience of her
on-iivtim, Charles ("arson, in Greenvillecounty. '
She had b?en urostrnied for several months from
age anAa^erjHp'initio*. Mrs. Hutler was the
whlow^^Hfl^^Ririn Hutler, oldest son of Gen- J
of revolutionary fuiuc.
brother aTjjpaBvckcns Hutler and QovcW
Pierce as the youngest daughter
of Co^Hm^^GHHB)tgher Raymond Perry,
of the and the of
Commodore Oliv^^^^W^^, of lake Erie memory,
and of Commodore Calbreth Perry, of the
United States navy. She woe the mother of our
own South Carolina Confederate General, M.
Calbreth Dutlor, and of Colonrf'Wm. Hutler and <
Captain O. N. Hutler; who distinguished (themselves
in the late war, and of Dr. P. P. Hutler,
a much respected Physician of Union County.
Mrs. Hutler was a remarkable woman in many
respects. She was not only connected by blood
and marriage with the chivalric Hit tiers of
faanlins Kllf ulin \V!\H llUn (I (1 ill! IT h t l?P ftf t
a family of Rhode Island, renowned for its heroic
name, that will ever live imperishable in
the history of the United States.
She was borr in Newport, Rhode Island, in
December, 1791. In July, lSl'J, she married
Dr. William Duller, of this Stute, then a surgeon
in the United States navy, at Drooklyn, New
York. From the marriage was born sixteen
children, (nost of whom lived to grow to maturity.
Fire sons and four daughters survive her,
whose grief is now shared by many sympathising
friends.
Mrs. Dutler in her more youthful days was
remarkable also for her hcaflty, and she Was a
Mne looking lady to thetasi* She possessed An*
intelligence, and was always sprightly, pleasant
nud entertaining in the socioty of her friends.
As a wife and mother, she was unexcelled in devotion
to her duties. 8ho possessed the energetic
and heroic spirit that certainly distinguished
her family. A characteristic anecdote
about her is familiar to the people of Greenville.
When the yankee raid, after the surrender,
swooped down on Greenville, some of the soldiers
robbed her of a horse. She called on the
commanding officer for redress, and was introduced
as Mrs. Butler, sister of the distinguished
Commodore Oliver H. Perry. She refused to
curry favor on that ground, and immediately
said, "I had much rather l?e known as the
mother of General Calbreth Butler." The officer,
however, was magnanimous enough to order
restitution.
Mrs. Butler was a resident of Greenville for

in the Indian reserve, in Arkansas, whilst
he was holding the office of Indian agent, during
President Tyler's administration. Dr. Butler
once represented the district of Pendleton
und Greenville in Congress, succeeding Geuernl
Tltftaipson in 1840. He was distinguished for
hitCnlegrity and honorable and manly qualities.
We believe Mrs. Butler wns the last survivor of
her father's children. Her memory will be ever
venerated by her descendants, and by all who
appreciate true worth and high And noble qualities
in man or woman, who may be acquainted

Tub Parker Jury.?One of the greatest misfortunes
likely to befall the Parker jury, after
they shall'have been discharged from the lofty
labors to which they have been called, is the unfitness
with which they will return to their ordinary
humble duties. Men who have been for
woeks handling hundreds of thousands and contemplating
millions, and sitting in judgment on
State officers, the object and the envy of their
fellow-men, cannot return to the obscurity of
private life without a pang. Already it is rumored
that some of them propose going into the
brokerage business, on the financial knowledge
acquired in the pending trial as their principal
capital. The attention thev give to the ense is
unexavupled, just as the trjal itself is. No arWhined

ate, now in dock at Liverpool, reports that while
on his possnge from the ltio Grande his ship was
struck by a large fish, which made the vessel
shake very much. Thinking his ship had hceu
merely struck by the tail of some sea monster,
he took no further.notice of the matter; but after
discharging carte at lluncorn, and coining
into the Canada doCK, he found one of the plank
ends of the stern split, and on closer examina.
tion he discovered that a sword fish had driven
his sword completely through a plank, four iuches
in thickness, leaving the point of the sword
nearly eight inches through the plauk. The fish
in its struggle broke the sword off at the outside
of the vessel, and by its attack upon the ship
lost nearly a foot in length of the very dangerous
weapon with which it was armed.
. . Gboiujk Applkwaitb a Prisoner.?We learn
from a special telegram sent us last night, that
George Applewaite, a negro, and tho last of the
Lowry Gang, is now a prisoner in the custody
of the Sheriff of Wayne County. From what
we can learn, Applewaite was arrested on suapi?
cion and identified by means of a photograph.
The prisoner was some time ago sentenced to
death in one of the interior Counties of our
State, and broke jail while awaiting the day of
execution. This is the last of the gang of
thieves and murderers, that once infested a portion
of the State. It is to be hoped that the bird
will bo securely caged this time, in order that
tho majesty of the law may be vindicated.? Wilmington

A Confidence Game.?It is believed that there
are imposters in Northern markets buying goods
under assumed names of reliable North Carolina
merchants. It is thought the device used to
commit the swindle is to represent thch^Urchascs
to be for a "branch store," and thus avoid shipment
to the regular address of reliablo merchants.
It will bo well foyNorthern wholesale
merchants \o keep a sharp lookout. Facts have
been developed showing that parties have been
using the names of responsible business men in
Raleigh and in Oxford, and buying goods both
in Now York an4 Trenton. N. J.
