The colored churches, especially io e country, are said to be thc places ere feuds sometimes culminate in free hts, to the scandal ol religioo and the ach of good order. A recent affair this kind at Ebeneser church, near . KNOX'S plantation, gave rise to prosecution of the partiel engaged. cease was tried last week in Trial Jus HURST'S court, before a jury compos equally of both races. Mr. FLEMING ducted the prosecution and Mr. ISE the defence The defendants Bte all convicted of riot and assault battery, and were duly sentenced. lesson thus administered may have (pwd effect io checking ?uch disgrace disturbances. Abac nt bat not Forgotten* We clip the following from tW Virginia Free Press of Aug. 26, pub-, lished at Charlestown, Weat Virginia: '.'REV. Dr MCQ?EEN. We had the pleasure on Sunday last ] of listening to a very able discourse ? from Rev. Dr. MCQUEEN, ot Sumter, South Carolina, who has been visiting! in this county for some days past, the I guest of Col CC. Porter. Dr. M. isa genuine Southerner, and suffered greatly luring the late war, from which reverses he has never wholly recovered. We trust this may not be bis last visit in our county. We clip the following paragraph from the Sumter Watchm&n. "We learn that Rev. Dr. MCQUEEK has accepted an invitation, from wealthy Virginian, to visit the Old Dominion and enjoy a few weeks recre? ation as his guest, his host having on several visits to Sumter formed quite so attachment to the genial Presbyterian pastor. Dr. MCQUEEN'S church bas voted him leave of absence for this purpose." [COMMUNICATED.] Pire Inanranee. Few persons pay proper attention to this important subject. Merchants generally insure - their stock of goods, but they who may be considered the most prudent class of the community frequently leave their dwell* ?og houses and premises uninsured. In the United States from the organi? zation of the Government, to the yesr j 1870, tao thonsand millions of dollars, have been consumed by fire, exclusive of j losses by war. It is estimated that one dollar and a half, out of every one hundred dollars is consumed by fire every year. Yet an immense amount of insureable property is left uninsured all the time. For a very trifling sum all these losses could be avoided, or rather, could be made to Tall upon a large number oi per* sons in *ery small sums. For 2je. per day, 81.000 can be insured at 1 perc. ; for 52 c. per day $1,000 cac be insured at 2 per c. kc. The cost is trifling and the security ic good companies is complete. Except for the wealthy, Insurance is a duty. It is s duty to one's creditor, to one's family and tc one's self. From a circular issued y the Andes Insurance Co., of Cinciunatti, C. H. Moise, agent for Sumter, it appears that it has cleared nearly s haif a million in twelve months, lt bas paid its stock holcers 10 per ceot, and its stock is now worth 115 eiclUsive of the 10 per cent dividend. Mr. lieu nett, the experienced Presi? dent, finds the business increasing so fast that be is about getting up two new companies with half a million capital each. We commend this new and en* crgetic company to the public and feel assured they will do well to place a por? tion of their insurances in such good hands. SAFETY. The concluding passages of Gen. Ewing's speech present so forcibly the mission of the Democratic party, that they deserve a conspicuous place in every journal devoted to the rights aod liberties of the people. We cannot commend them too highly : "In this contest the Democratic party is the sword aod buckler of the people. It has fought every existing abuse, and tried to apply every appro? priate remedy. Though sometimes con? trolled by slavery, and raekrd by discord and by war, it bas kept the faith i? the people and free government, -which Jefferson, its glorious apostle, (aught. It represents no faction, bot the whole people; no section, bot tbe whole couotry. It is not s white man's party, or a black mao'a party; a poor man's, or a rich man's, a Christian's, or an infidel's party. It is the people's party. It will trample on no mao, and give no man preference before the law. It Staads for the reserved fights of the people sod the States, because liberty dwells with them. It is jealous of every extension of Federal power, because tbs path to consolidation leads on to despotism. It fights for equality against privilege Democracy against aristocracy-govern? ment by the ballot against govern? ment by the dollar and thc bayonet. \'; It looks to tbe people, and seeks direc? tion and strength from them, whence comes tbe inspiration of every great rt* form.
