A L1i'h F11 . A STRONG LETTFIR, FRU v- t N EX- & PERIENCED FARbiER. Vacts aud Fligares to how Elow &be A1li Uace MNY hoeccessfullY Meet &be lmus-se Ubefor* It. The following letter will be read with interest: Mr. R. A. Meares, 8ccretary of the Farmers' Alliance, Ridgeway, 8. C. Dear Sir: Your letter to hand. Re plying I will say that the true policy of our Alliance is to borrow money. With the cash in hand, or in bark rather, all things are perfectly plain. The farmer knows what he is doing, and the party with whom he trades also understand the status of affairs and will offeor much better tern a. Compare this plan with the old way. We will suppos" that a reasonable es thmate for the necessities of any p,-r ticdlar Alliance has been made, that the member have, after deliberation and consultation with each othar. agroed upon the minimiui amount, requisite to carry them through ich season. These individual items ng gregated, we will say iount, to $6.000. Now let us compare $5,000 in e:sh as against $5,000 in the old way. Tho interest on $5,000 from, say, the t,t. of March to the 15th of November, at 10 per cent., Votld bo in round n1uil bers $395. But it is practicaule to ai - range for the layment of at lens .1 cent. interest. on the money ivit g iule, or on deposit, for it is of coir-se 'on tomplated that there will be only monthly drawings, consequently the interest aecount would be greatly re duced, and, in fact, not rato highe. than 6 per cent. theoreL.z1!y. I think it perha,)s not unreiasonablo to any that in the pa.t or by the olk plan the interest charged oil n erchian.iso was 50 per cent.; on $5,000 in good i, therfore, the interest accovii, v.c'ld be$2,500. The plan now prop.s..i is to have ourown agents and exchanre., thereby purchasing cheaper ind 'is pensing with iniddlem-nen as far as prac ticable to enable our peoplo t,o secure supplies at greatly rediuced prices. This paln1haseverything to recommend it to thotc who are ahle to take care of themselves and furnish the '.ish, but unforlunat.ely niany of* our best, people handle no spare toney, and1 although they are inembers of the order are practically outsider., w f-a as relates to substantial adVs a. In fact they are worse than outsiders, for they are called upon to pity les and dues ais well as tax thmiv's with cotton bagging, etc., etc., realiy for the benefit of his more fortu1nte brethren. Now, sir, we I:ve in :a prac. tical, materilistic and utilitarian .jg fancy theories and grand air caKIes be they never so artistically built, will not sat"sfy the wante ofa hungry pe-o pie nor furnish ahodes for 1hosA who are ever without ch)ango to I, drive!n from subetautial homes an n111ade t en ants upon the lans of their fathers. But,repii-s one of oir pnipi, er- , the merchants will be glad to have the trade of any of the Alliances, ant'l to secure it wil be willing to lurnish atll alike, both those who canii give b''mbl proof papers and those wh,> can gi .et simply liens upo~n their. crop, and it. i.-, 1- that Jan s.ne,snbv,. , ,, rii-mots of' the bouticsit of I ic schemne. This theory is ver:' fine, but what aie the fac:' T1hie hnerchia,:t themselves, so far from being anx.ioIns tfor this tradIe, actually decline t oo u.nion which they e 'n borrow the mn ey wvh'evich to run the businiess, anud< I mntend no critieis,n upon the mesr chaut!, for', in my opinion, it would Y,0 a very poor business man who wouhld use his own capital wher&i the r'isks were so gr'eat and the mnargim.3 so small. But thi' ditliculty is not only in the refusal of the mnerchienits, for moict of'i t he Alliances submuisting pr'oposi tions for suppliei have made excepit ions o0 many of those who were able to uet t along without assist ance, upon the pilea that they had already ariangedm for' I the year. This was equiv"alent to say- I ing, we.wish you to furnish the d1,ubt- I ful portion of our' Alliance, but those e' of us who can be made to pay propose to tra&de where we p)lease. It is rcsidily to be seen that there is nothing, abso-- : lutely nothing, in this grand theory upon wvhich all the orgnizers of' A lii- t ances (d welt vo eloquent,ly in the beg;in fling, claiming it, in fact, as the very keystone of this grand arch about to i1 be erected. We have now reached two concli sions: First, that the plani of selecting agents, establishing war'ehouses, o- f changes, etc., etc., all based upon a cash Idea, ls amost admirab.nlearran,ge men1t for the moneyed men, but ofl'ers no immediate advantage to the i n.' pecunious. IflI were attacking the ~ Alliance idea . would say it wasi a tined scheme "to mike the rich rtoij: and the poor poorer."~ Our second conclu- ' sion demonstrates fully the utter folly ~ of offering our trade upon the conso - a lidation idea, 1. e., having imerchiants a coinpeote for our whole tr'ade, solect in g that one who offered the lowest i per cent. on cash price. As I said be- ~ fore, the farmers themselv~es haveI wisely abandoned this plan. 1 say wisely, because any one who proposes a to eff'ect loans, either in money or l supplies, at a rate of not les t'aan 25 per cent ,to bo met b)y earm' igs from a business-like farming which (does not pay one-fourth of the amount, acts fool ishly in his individual capacity, and injures his neighbor who is on- Y couraged to do likewise. Now let us Si see If my estimate of 25 per cent. is I' higher than the rate which wouldl be~ charged. In the first place, the mnoaey 0 ia raised up~on the paper given by the tr members; here is a discount of 10 per~ d cent., then marchants usually rate ci freights dlelivered from dlepot to store Il etc., etc., at 10 per cent, more to be ha safe, then the cheapest proposition a that I have heard of was 8 per cent. a profit for the dealer eggregating 28 It; per cent. ThisswhatlIiterp)ret 8 a per cent. on cash prices to mean, Jt is o then not to be wondered at that there sC are so mamy in each Alliance who wish "' to be excused wheu the general trade a'f isto be off'ered. Distrusting the ability be of members to m3et such engagements er and being able themseolves to do much ti< better, they ask to be excepted, and many seem satisfied to paddle their own canoes regardleas of conaequen- toi ces te, their po->rer brother, notwith- to standing the fact, well known, that K. they hav e sworn solemnly to make his mi care their care. lo much in the way op of general criticism. And it is a very w easy thing to OrItinal..-- .,d can dot 6c,- 7,h b 1 1,4 ()1 tile. ejjL4;l1ty i utte a dw1; e.. im We will now recur to the fgu res ;Iven above. FIve thouand det.. i, t 28 per cent., would net the Mihan.v t3,600, but this plan has been fihow%n o be impracticable. We maus, there oro, consider the old lien and mort ;age idea with its r0 per cent. premium. lero we would have $6,000 netting 2,500, and it is with the latter amount ,hat I propose to compare the cash mais or money-borrowing plain. Five h1outL.u,1.d dollni for nine months-the amo tii) as comout?hd in abovo ex uiple-woild at 10 per cent. discouut, act $1,625. We now have 4,6215 aginSt 3,50d, or a saving to eh Alliance of 2,123. But with a rebate of 4 per sent on the amount, not drawn we would theoro, ically bo paying 3 Ier ent., but really about 9I pea cont. We tiro now entit,od to a new cil;ulat ion. Five tCouanid dollais at 8 p.r ceit ror ninc nonthz would be $3 iastead of 376 andI hence the exact, amount save I would be the diflerence he tween $4,700 and $2,500, which is $', 200.
