When Y got I here I saw the best prospect for o srops I hate ever seen. The corn 1n m the river bottoms was very fine. t bout 1,000 acres of this bottom can v be seen from one place. The scene t i was perfectly grand. On July 24th it commenced!to rain i and it continued to rain almost in cessantly until August 2d. The Tu- I gab, which is from 75 to 100 yards I wide, 1 egan, as a matter of course, i to rise, and on the 2d day of August it was from hill to hill, in pla ces nearly a mile wide. The corn which was so beautiful but a few days before was at that time nearly under waters I remember counting the tassols hi one piece of corn that was estimated to make about three hundred bushels and six tassels wero all that could be seen. The bridge, about 100 yards long across the river and about 25 feet high, was washed away. The water was from 24 to 3 feet higher than was ever known in the memory of the old cst men on the river. I stood on the brilgo two or three hours in the afternoon of the 1st inst. until nearly dark and wat"ched logs and whole t,roes on after another in rapil SuCCOsion1 rush (own the cur rent. The water was nearly up to the brdge all along and the trees and logs woult hit it as they waslhed ' down streaum and kept it in a con slant jar. When I left the bridge the South Carolina end was floating about lI feet high. I ste ped of in to water over knee deep on the hank and waded through water about. 300 yards to the hill. At one place thn water was up under mry arms. S<nuotimo during the night the bridge left. The water was three or four feet (ldep in lmlany dwellin houses anl the furnituro being washed ILWay. Some houses and mills Were swept away. On the morning of the 2d I saw a mill wheel going down. A few horses, buggies and wagon were 1 carried off, aid a great deal of other property. There were inleno land slides on the Imoulntains. The surface of the earth became so thoroughly soaked t antd saturated writhl water that it. was ' not able to hold itself and the land, trees and tll rave Way in many lla ces and ruihed down te mouttnin side inito the( valley. In on1e plae where the~ p)1blic htighwvay ran- along the edge of a steep hmuntain, thme surface of the mounitain ab)ove the road gave wvay and obstructed the road for 300 yards.
