"it1 A HOAIANUE IN R1EAL LIFE. The End of a BhIanaLd Career--Death of Col. V. J. Beynold, of Sumter. CoAu'BIA, July 13.-A special to the Daily Register from Sumter reports the death in that county, last Saturday, of Col. W. J. Reynolds, in the 79th year of his ago. Reynolds, fifty-fivo years ago, was one of the most promismng: young men in the State and was no for his industry, integrity and active in- t torest in military affairs. Ho foil deep:y 1 in love with a beautiful young girl be longing to one of the first families of Clermont District and made suit for her hand. He seemed to bo favorably re garded by the girl herself, but her parents had more ambitious views for her and would not allow her to marry him. Nothing daunted the young man went to work to win a name and a posi tion which would render him more ac coptable to the parents. Io was elected to represent his county in the State Legislature, served one term with credit and distinction, and returning to his hore muado another etlort to secure the hand of the girl to whom he was attach ed. He was again refused, but after he had been elected a third time Rrpre sentative over prominent and wealthy competitors the opposition to him was apparently silenced, the young woman promised to ho his wife, and all the preparations we made for.the wedding. At the last moment, howevcr, she wrote him a note saying she had yit lded to the wishes of her uothcr and must decline to fulfil her engag :unt. This broke up Colonel Reynolds's life and career. After brooding a long time over his dis appointment lie took for a wife a negro girl who had been his :;hive and lived with her to the last, regardless of public opinion and the entreaties of his rela tio':t. lie reared a largo family of childi "n a'd drew up himse f a will pro viding for them all and putting tlw'm on an equality with his own nearest rela tives. He left an estate consistilng of some thousand dollars in money oad 4,000 acres of lau-, and it i.; thought that the validity of the will will he sus tained. S'Tl;lII i- .-s .)I i'ION.
